I know this is now a very old thread, but several things have changed on Tangleberry that affect this issue.
  1. I bought a new Dacron mainsail from Leitch and McBride, a local sailmaker.  We ordered Bainbridge Allslip slides. These are inexpensive and slide very freely without lubrication. They are made with a very slippery black plastic, described as precision molded from glass fibre reinforced plastic with a PTFE(teflon) impregnation.
  2. The main halyard was replaced with 10 mm Dyneema greatly reducing friction through the blocks and clutches. Even when dropped from the cockpit the sail drops like a stone and the halyard flies through the blocks.
  3. I bought a Wincher electric winch handle, replacing the huge Milwaukee drill we used to have. It is much lighter, under 3 kilos, and has more torque and a longer battery life. As a result I use it a lot more. It is now possible to raise the main about 90% from the cockpit without the winch, then use the wincher for the last bit. The faster of the 2 speeds is powerful enough.
  4. Also got a new lazy bag from the same source. This was primarily because the old one was too tight on the new sail and blew the zipper. The new one was expensive, but very well engineered and should outlast me.
Handling the main is now pure pleasure, Reefing was also improved with new 8mm reef lines which again reduced friction.

Grahame, what did you use for your new reef lines?

They are just regular double-braid polyester, but smaller than the original 12 mm/1/2" that Hanse used for almost everything.

Stretch is not a big problem since, when reefed, the reef line is relatively short.  Hi-tech lines are worthwhile for the halyards, but I can't see the need on most of the other lines.
