    Posted: 15 March 2015 at 12:09
Hi everyone,

I have recently purchased a Hanse 350, 2008. She is a lovely boat and I can't wait to get her in the water.

There is currently one issue however - the depth sounder does not seem to be working. I have the airmar DST800 transducer which does the temperature, speed and the depth. The temperature shows up fine, as does the speed when i spin the paddles however the depth does not show anything.

Have any of you experienced anything similar/have any recommendations? I have tried scrubbing the depth part of the transducer but to no effect unfortunately.

Thank you very much

If your boat is not in the water, than the depth sounder will not work or will show wrong depth!
A depth sounder needs the water for correct work!
So -  just wait for launch and it will work.

Thank you for your reply.

That's very interesting, I did not know that. Would I be able to test it in a bucket of water? Or should I just wait for launch?

Currently there are just two dashes where the depth should be.

I think the bucket will be to small, as the usual sounder needs a minimum depth.

I would wait until lauch. If the sounder still not works, it is easy to change it while the boat is in the water. It takes only 1-2 Minutes.

I don't want to pick holes in an Admiral's advice, but I have the same transducer and would question a little further. :-)

Do you get no reading at all or just a nonsense value. I have the same transducer and do get nonsense values when the boat is in its cradle. In that case it is likely to be functional. However if you've no reading at all the the following steps reflect my learnings from previous snags:

1. Make sure depth element of transducer is enabled. IS12 etc and Triton instruments all seem to have a depth transducer off option
2. Do the obvious of checking the cable run
3. If you've IS12 or 15 instruments look very very carefully at the connection pins on the rear of the instrument. I've twice found them to be loose due to dry joints on the PCB. It's possible to split the instrument and resolder. Look for an earlier post from me on the subject
4. If you want to be really sure before relaunch that it is not the transducer buy a second cheap depth only transducer and connect to the instrument. Possibly a spare power connection too. You can take the instrument off the boat if needed and power it from a temp battery whilst dangling the transducer in the dock.
5. Ultimately buy a second-hand gauge - a depth-only gauge is enough for test purposes

Enjoy the new boat!

Thanks both for your posts - both very informative. I will certainly try those steps and see if I have any luck. My only worry is the currently the display only shows two dashes for depth and the bottom of the the transducer seems slightly scuffed. I have attached a picture to see if you think the damage is more than superficial.

Thanks

Seen worse Hugo.  Gently cleanup & apply transducer antifoul paint and it would look as good as new!

The transducer on our 325 failed last year, problems started with the temp reading 50+ deg C (which around the UK was just not correct), then we found that the log was reading about 3Kts low.  We have just purchased a new unit from JG Technologies as they were recommended by Airmar France as UK distributors.  The new unit was about £230 so if you can save the original it's worth it.

I would not worry too much about not getting a reading out of the water, the unit is after all designed to work in water.  Check it out once the boat is back in the water and if the worst happens you can get a replacement in a few days.

Good luck

Thank you all for your help.

It's good to know that it is changeable once launched if it indeed still doesn't work when she is put in.

I shall report back with the progress.

Thanks again

The two dashes for depth while out of water is completely normal.

Your transducer looks as if it needs to be cleaned ias the whitish stuff in your photo looks like fouling. I soak the transducer end in warm water and use a toothbrush, but I also sometimes need to use a plastic or wooden toothpick to pick away at the harder fouling. Exceptionally I use a small metal screwdriver CAREFULLY to scrape the hard fouling. To clean the shaft which the paddle wheel is on, I use floss which you use on teeth with the same sort of action.
