Sorry to see the trouble you're having.
As you all know, the anchor windlass installation was one of the major issues we had with our 400e. Using the windlass' recommended chain, it would jam every 10' or so...
Hanse's solution was to replace our chain with stainless chain and claimed it would no longer jam.
Let me be perfectly clear, when I tested it in the slip, it did in fact work and did not jam at all, so while I was somewhat less than happy with the solution, I felt compelled to accept it.
Unfortunately, we have not headed out again and I cannot tell you if it will continue to work once it has been in the water a few times.
I'd hate to have to go on the warpath again.
All I can say is stick with it... do not Hanse or your yacht dealer off the hook. You have every right to expect the various systems on your hanse to function properly.
Best of luck,
Carlos

Ralf, I think it looks terrible. What's the point in having a windlass when you have to do it manually anyway? The sad thing is that you are not by far the only one having this problem. (I am not speaking for myself here though)
I hope Hanse will solve this for you and everybody else. Johan |

I have 50 meters of 8mm chain on my new 370(3 weeks old) and can confirm it jams every 2-3 meters or so. I have to hand-lay the chain completely. The installation instruction from Lewmar states that the winch needs a minimum of 30 cm free fall/clearance.
Have anyone a 370 with stainless chain ?
Does anyone have a 370 where this works ok ?

This is definitely a Hanse problem as they have installed the Windlass in contradiction to Lewmar's installation instructions so far as I can see from the video. See page 5/6 of the Lewmar manual - it reads "There must be sufficient vertical fall for the chain or rope, even with a full locker, to draw the rode from the gypsy when hauling in." and there is a picture (figure 1.6.2) showing that there needs to be a minimum 300mm vertical space for chain to drop off the gipsy.
Fortunately on the 342 it is installed this way and I only have to stop once when hauling in my 50m chain to push the cone of chain over.
Talk to your dealer. In the meantime I would spray that slope the chain runs down with lots of PTFE lubricant.

Gents,
This is indeed a design problem on both the 370 and the 400 (if not others). It's been discussed in other threads a fair bit with various solutions being presented but none offered by Hanse. "Landlocked" has posted some pretty detailed drawings of his solution. I wonder if Hanse has changed this on the new model of the 400 they are now rolling out?

I've been thinking about a possible solution to this anchor locker problem. I thought I'd share it to see what others thought. There is quite a bit of free space up in the 370/400 nose (and possibly others too). Is it possible to make a secondary anchor locker beneath the first linked by a chain hawse pipe? The chain would run around the windlass and down the pipe. With enough drop below this would pull through hands-free.
It should be possible to make it sufficiently waterproof. If the hawse pipe stood proud then any water entering the locker would drain before any went down the pipe.
An advantage of this is that it would get the weight lower down in the boat. If you wanted to be really fancy you could lead it back to behind the water tank in the bow.
Thoughts anyone?

I urge you to do a search on Landlocks solution, it's a simple metal ramp that's installed without modification to much else. Allows the chain to slide into the deeper part of the locker instead of piling up underneath the windlass...

It's somewhat annoying that Hanse doesn't implement the simple fix, if it works.
My solution is that I have to stand inside the achor locker and repeatedly kick the chain into the deep part of the locker. I've added som anti skid tape inside the locker in order not to slip and fall when doing this. However, I'm reminded about the poor engineering and faulty design every time I use the windlass.
