Shaukaas,
Larger jibs has been discussed a fair bit elsewhere in the forum, can't remember if it was in chit-chat or the 400 or 370 sections. In any case, I race my 400 a fair bit and even a 108% is not competitive in light winds (less than 9 knots). Last year I spent more money and got a 145% and was very pleased with it's performance in the 6-12 knot range.

Clearly, a jib in the 103 to 108% range is an improvement over the standard cruising jib that is supplied but it really doesn't help much in the light breezes.

Thanks, Steve!

I would definitely like to go for a bigger sail, but the problem is that there is probably not any room for a bigger foresail on the 320, because of the arrangement of the side stays. I believe this is not a problem on the larger models, from 350 and up where the attachment for the side stays is penetrating the free board. As you may notice from the picture, the side stays on a 320 is attached on the "outside" of the hull. Also you can see the T-tracks on deck, being somewhere in a  forward position of the boat.

Another issue to adress is how to get the jibsheet to the winches without getting in conflict with the cabin structure. As can bee seen from your picture the tracks are very close to the cabin and there is a extension in the wall from the aft cabin/toilet section (the "small window section"). The cabin is hence not very jibe sheet friendly.

We purchased footblocks with stoppers (from lewmar) to mount on 35 mm thick POM blocks (tailormade) to get the sheets away form the gelcoat/cabin structure. The stop feature on the foot blocks is for unloading the winches while tacking over to genaker sheets and setting the genaker (after setting the genaker, the jibe can then be rolled in).

Wink should work.

Alternatively, you can get extra toe-rail blocks to attach blocks to direct the sheet from the genoa cars to the winch. However this implies sheets right across the sidedecks and I do not know if I would trust the toe rail to be strong enough for this purpose.

Any opinions?Clap

Shaukaas,
Thanks for the pic, I see what you mean. It would definitely be a challenge to sheet a 145%!!

Shaukaas, ordered from Gaastra Sails (Netherlands)a set of Custom Axis Laminate with Pentex fibres. Have the sails at home now and they look splendit! The HA has vertical battens, the main 2 full battens. Will try them first week of April.
Whilst picking up the Sails from Gaastra they mentioned that there was an other set CAL sails for a Hanse 320 ready for delivery.
Pricing is competative and the sell a lot of these sails.
They are available with Pentex, Vectran or Technora fibres.

I've seen the link, and these sails really look nice, did they come to measure your boat? or they have standar sizes?. What range of price are we talking about?

Thank you, Corioulis2, these sails look great! I will definitly contact Gaastra the next time I'm looking for a new sail. That's probably going to be next year - the main. The only challenge orderring sails from abroad is if something is not correct. For downwind sails there are more room for inaccurancy, but for main and jib i belive it's more critical.

I just ordered a 105% Genoa/Jib from Elvström. This is made of Elvströms own clotch called Epex, and is a trioptimal design. The sailmaker will come in person to take all the measurements of the boat, to assure the ultimate cut.

Because of the exchange rates from Norwegian kroners to Euros, I got a very good price on this sail - and even thus it's a bit too much of a perfomance sail, it should still be a good solution. The main advantage is the Epex which do not have the problem with molding. The sail is a fully racing optimized sail, with two vertical battens. So the challenge now, is being able to use the new sail's full potential! Big%20smile

I will try to remember to share these, when the sailmaker has taken all the measurements. Embarrassed
