My 2003 Hanse 300 has a Volvo Penta MD 2010-D BT, No. 510 220 9719 which has been troublesome since new and currently has an issue where it will rev to over 4000 rpm in neutral but in the water it won't get over 2000 rpm - so is unable to power the boat adequately.

Boat was out in March for antifoul and motored a few miles only since then so assume the (non-folding) prop is clean and untangled (has a ropecutter) Volvo visited, bled the fuel system, found the seawater filter a bit clogged but nothing more, and advised that 2000 rpm on the pontoon was ok and should produce more power when motoring - but problem recurred today (leading to hairy marina manoeuvring!) They'll return tomorrow and this time do a sea trial - anyone else had this kind of issue? Any suggestions please?

Hi Mark.
Thinking out the box and remembering you have always had a problem from new.
1. It could be that the wrong prop (too large) has been on the boat since new!
2. Can the prop be fitted back to front, there by making it too coarse in ahead.
3 A prop with the wrong hand (say right instead of left) was fitted and the job bodged by flipping over the gear selection lever on the gear box so that throttle ahead engages reverse gear on a wrong handed prop which pushes the boat forward but at the incorrect gearing ratio. Very unlikely but possible?

Hi MIke, Gordon - thanks; Mike, I should have been clearer - this power problem's symptoms seem new - previous fuel system bleedings and hull cleans have solved sluggishness, and there has been overheating due to the saildrive inlets getting bunged with barnacled (fitted a new seacock to solve that), while the engine performs OK 80% of time.

So I'd guess that it's the corrrect prop the right way round, or the problem would be constant.

Gordon - will point out the exhaust elbow suggestion to Volvo.

Hi Mark,It may be a partially blocked air filter but I think Gordon could be right.I had similar problem a few years ago on my previous boat and eventually found my exhaust elbow was 50% blocked and after clearing the engine ran normally.David.

Update - boat was lifted to reveal large amount of growth on prop after just 2 months in the water since antifoul. The prop hadn't been antifouled - to allow it to run smoother! What do others do?

Do people recommend the Coppercoat or ultrasonic system?

I don't use an antifoul on the prop. Growth has never been a problem but then our waters aren't tropical. Looking at your location though, in the UK you have a similar climate to us so I find this rather amazing.

Just thought I would let you know, my 301 is based at Barmouth, Mid-Wales and i have to ensure i put at least 2 coats of Trilux on the sail drive and the prop, otherwise I would get weed and also barnicale growth.  Some would say it is down to lack of use, but I somehow dont think so, as I can do upwards of 1200 miles per year.
I have a feeling that the growth is due to the phosphates used on the Agricultural land up the easturary. I do not know the situation in Canada but is this similar?

If the prop is aluminium do not use any cooper based antifouling as it will cause electrolic corrosion, also do not use copper based antifouling on the aluminium saildrive leg or the aluminium rudder stock.
