I am thinking of fitting a 3G aerial on top of the mast. To minimize losses I will (if I go ahead with this) use a 10,2 mm thick cable. Inside the boat I will connect the cable to a router with a built-in modem.

I am looking for someone else's experience when it comes to fitting cables in the mast. My mast has only been unstepped shortly a few times since I got my boat so I don't know what it looks like inside. I only have a few pictures.

I also would like to know if anyone has any advice about where to put the exit hole at the mast base? I don't want to weaken the mast.

Johan

Johan,

I'll send you an email. You should not have to drill another hole in your mast.

Cheers,

Johan,

thanks for sharing the cable brand you have found.
That cable seem to be even better than the RG214 that is used by professional installation firms supporting the ship market.
The day I need to procure antenna cable next time I know what to buy (today do I use RG214).

Are you saying that you have an aerial in your masthead? Is that also for 3G use? I am curious to hear about your experience in that case.

The cable comes in a ready length of 15 meter. I think my mast is 14,45 (can anyone confirm that?) and I wonder if 15 meter might be a bit short?

Where would you let a cable exit in the masthead? Any advice?

Not yet, today only a VHF antenna but I love to use the best stuff for example do I not want to lose to much of the radio signal in the long cable so that is key to choice the right one designed for environment with lot of salt.

Regarding the length of the mast sounds it right and I share your thought that it would be better to have some extra cable in case of future replacement of connectors or damages in the top. I measured the length between the mast foot and the location inside where the connection points are located and added 7-8 dm extra on top of that.

Your post made me revise my pictures and I found one I took of the sticker inside the mast five years ago.

I don't know what all the numbers mean but 14550 must mean the length of the mast in millimeters. I wonder if a 15 meter cable will be too short considering that it has to make a bend into the gooseneck? (I also wonder if I don't remember my measurement of 14,45 correctly. I will check this when I take down the mast.)

1. 15m is definatly to short if your mast is 14,55m
2. I would buy minimum 2-3m more. Cutting it is much more easy than extending ;-)
3. Nice thing is: In your foto you see a pilotrope. So you can pull the cable easy through the mast. Pull it together with another pilotrope. So you have it for the next cable later.....
4. There must be a exit at the masttop for i.E. your windvane or anchorlight! I used the same hole for the installation of my seame radar reflector.

The bad thing is that the pilot line is there no more. The picture is old and the line was probably been used when I had IS15 replaced with IS20, but I am not sure.

There are no holes wide enough on top of the masthead. I have been thinking of letting the cable exit from the side of the mast and mount the aerial on an aluminium plate opposite the VHF aerial. Or maybe just make one of the existing holes a bit bigger? I don't know.

The picture below is the current configuration after many changes over the years. I think you can tell by the many empty screw holes.

Hi Johan
for 3G you will be operating at between 1 and 2 GHz so the losses of RG58U will be quite high, However there is a mill spec RG58 which has about half the loss of the RG58U, and the diameter is only 6mm. I have 100m sitting around doing nothing at home if you are interested

Andrew, I might be interested. I don't know if I will go through with this though. Finding the right hardware is one thing, finding a subscription is another. My provider will not let me have a twin SIM card, they only want to sell another subscription. Agreeably, when going to another country the subscription will be "country-dependent", like when I went to Finland the past summer. But to overcome bad service in the various Swedish archipelagos, an aerial would help a lot.

I have found that I get good service when I sail on open waters but no service when I am moored, and then I can still see that waters I sailed! And imagine what empty my life is when I cannot keep myself updated with what is going on at myHanse!
