Thanks Sue,

I think the Vetus is the simplest and most comprehensive solution.  Also good to hear it definately works.  I'm going to check the measurements when I'm next out on Hilde and order one.

The US Racor system isn't available here.  They sell it for about $90 on the other side of the pond but then want $50 postage.  An opportunity there for any budding marine supply company - or Hanse .....

I really like the idea of two Ikea funnels.   Stick them together - put "yacht" on the box - and have a markup from £10 to £100 .  It is always satisfying to find something out of the marine world that works well on a boat and saves a packet. Seriously, Popeye - some good ideas.  I agree with your prognosis but the Vetus solution is proven and also catches fuel bubbling up the filler tube.

Colin.

Colin

Unsure as to where you are in the UK but we managed to get our vetus from the local chandlers where we moor - we asked them to order it in for us and it was waiting for us the following week.

Filled the boat up for the first time last weekend, and waited with fear for the foaming filler vent. But to my disappointment it didn't foam..... the main filler hole did though!!

About 2-3 seconds after the tank saying "CLANK" (= I'm full up) I shut off the filler pistol and though "home and dry", but then the fuel poured back out the filler hole.

I reckon the tank had just gone "CLUNK" (the opposite of clank) and had therefore pushed a disgusting amount of fuel the wrong way out the filler tube.

Next time I will instantly shut of the fuel pistol at the first "CLANK".

Luckily 15 years of boating meant that I had the washing-up liquid on the ready, and no kids or wives on board.

Hi All,

I purchased and installed the Racor solution. Got it from West Marine by catalogue. Nice product, easy to install and best of all - IT WORKS!

Thanks Bob,

I too ordered a Racor from West Marine.  Pretty good delivery cost.  Was delivered to me 48 hours after ordering.  Pretty good for US to UK delivery.

Will fit it in a 1 weeks time and hope to report on a cure too.

I have had the same problem on my 371. My solution is to estimate the fuel needed and add that many literes, based on the gauge reading. I don't get the tank topped right off, but no spills.

A loop in the breather line will make the problem worse. That is because a bit of fuel will sit in the line, to be expelled by the first high pressure air.

When filling the tank actually "breathes" partially back up through the filler pipe until the moment when the fuel covers the bottom of it. Then all the air has to rush out the breather pipe at once, usually taking some fuel with it.

In any case the Racaor and Vetus solutions are good and should be factory fitted.

Have any of you seeen the article in this months Practical Boat Owner on the vetus splash stop.

web site www.vetus.co.uk

Also Sailing today have done a 'new gear' article on a deck filler gauge, apparently it shows the level of fuel from the deck.

I plan to install the Vetus device on our 370.  Apart from the inline filler connection, the overflow chamber on the current model needs to be connected to the tank (this in addition to the vent connection).  The Vetus rep assured me that our tank would have a spare connection point on the filler plate to accept the Vetus overflow tube.  Can you confirm that this is so from your own experience?
