What size boat do you have. We have a 430 on order and we are confused as to which feathering prop will be most successfull

Hello,

The following links might help somewhat with your prop questions

You probably know these sites but I thought to put them on anyway

For whatever reference it might be the Flex-o-fold on the 400e with Yanmar 40HP (29KW) is diameter 430mm.

Hi Ken

We have the FOF 18X12 propeller supplied as an option on our 430 Uhambo. Very satisfied after 250 hours! Works well in all conditions and gives a good average speed/consumption ratio.
A 18X13 would be faster but out of the Yanmar/Hanse specs!!

If anyone is interested I happen to have a flex-o-fold for sale.  I replaced my 3 blade folding flex-o-fold from my 371 with a Kiwi prop a few years ago.  The flex-o-fold saw only two seasons of use and has been in my garden shed since.  Was finally getting round to putting it up on ebay and saw this thread.  Drop me a line if interested.  It's from my 371 with a 30hp Yanmar.   Was factory fit option so not entirely sure of spec.  Measures about 15 inches from tip to tip.

I recently contacted Flex O Fold about the propeller size fitted on Uhambo:
as a matter of information I copy the answer.

Dear Sir,

I recently purchased a Hanse 430 which is equipped with a Yanmar 54 hp
and a 18X12 3 blades Flex o Fold propeller. I have already logged 2500
NM including 270hours engine

I found the propeller size too short: 2000 rev gives 6.3 knt. The same
boat with the same engine and a gori prop gives 7.3 knt.
I would like to know if it is possible to change the blades and fit the
propeller with a greater pitch? And at what price?

Alain Saniez

Dear Sir
This is a common discussion which need some comments regarding overloading a
modern diesel engine, pollution and engine warranty.
Many boat owners want to cruse at low rpm, and they really never attempt to
utilize the maximum performance from the engine. In other words, they do not
overload the engine under these circumstances, but the risc exist and that
is the problem.

The same boat as yours with a Gori and 7.3 knots at 2000 rpm will most
probably not be able to reach its rated rpm 3.000 + 5%, without overheating
and carbonizing. If the engine breaks down for some reasons within the
warranty period, the engine manufacturer will claim that the problem is
caused by a propeller being too large. As a consequence from that, they will
also be reluctant to accept a warranty claim.

According to Yanmar, a propellersize is approved if the hull speed is
achieved at max rpm + 5% and I know that Hanse and Yanmar have decided to
specify the 3 blade 18x12 for that reason.
Believe me, it is easy for us to achieve 7.3 knots or more at 2.000 rpm. You
could get a new bladeset 18x13-3L or 18x14-3L. The price is 1.100 Euro incl
VAT.
The question is if you are prepared to change within the warranty period. I
doubt that Yanmar will approve the Gori if the warranty is still valid.

Best regards
Jack Skrydstrup

Alain,

Funny to read this, because I spoke to the flex-o-fold dealer in the Netherlands the other day, and he said exactly the same. He advised me to have the enige running at full speed for an hour or so and to do that every now and than. This is good for the engine. I never have the engine running at full speed, just for caution reasons. I'll change my habit on this one.

Yesterday I tried the breaking power of the SPW VariProp:
It was exactly one boat length from 8.0 to 0.0 knots.

Hi,

The point posted by Alain is valid, as i myself have had a Maxprop 18" to comply to Yanmars specifications on the 4Jh4E with such a propellor and achieve 5.6kts @ 1800rpm ; similar to the 6.2kts @ 2000rpm with FOF.

i guess it is a question over speed/consumption/rpm.
But i am quiet comfortable with this set-up, and have plenty of troque at low rpm's, especially in reverse.
