    Posted: 19 April 2014 at 10:10
Hi All,

my bow thruster does not work any more. It lowers without problem no error beeping, but when trying to use left or right nothing happens.
I can bring it up again without problem.
Where to start looking for the problem? Is it a fuse, and if where is it?

I remeber there was a threat about Max Pro problem before here on the forum, but I am not sure if this is about my problem.

Thanks in advance for support.

Cheers HanaFe

Hi,
Are you sure you have a Max Pro? If you have a 'Max Power compact retract' I can probably help you with all the technical details. I had the same problem on my 445 and found the solution. Now the bow thruster works perfectly!

Kind regards
René

Dear Rene,

you are right. The exact name is Max Power compact retract.
Would be nice if you could let me know a solution.

Cheers

Hi,
There is a microswitch somewhere informing the control box that the bow thruster is fully extended to allow using the latteral. Each model is different but all have this important security .

Hi HanaFe,
The problem is probably the heat sensor of the motor of the thruster. It's a well know problem on those trusters. You can't replace the sensor (only the factory Maxpower in Italy can do it) but don't worry about it because your bow thruster has a second one that you can connect.
How to test the sensor (without a Ohm meter):
- disconnect the two white wires (which comes from the thruster) in the control box (under the bed)
- start the bow thruster for a short time in both directions.
- if the thruster works, proves that you have a problem on the sensor
You can use the thruster without the sensor, but never use it for more than 2 minutes. A specialist of Maxpower told me that many people use the thruster without the sensor.
How connect the backup sensor:
- disconnect (inside of the boat) on the left side of the thruster the rubber hose
- inside the hose you find two protected white wires of the backup sensor
- connect those wires on the control box.
If you send me your e-mail address, I'll send you the wiring plans and drawings.
Sorry for my poor English but it's my third language.........
Good luck and send me some news.
René

Dear Rene,

thanks for the good advice.
I will check check the white wires today. If this is the problem I will try to conect the second sensor according to your wiring plan.
Could you pls send it through the private message function of the forum.

Thanks a lot again and I keep you updated later tonight.

Cheers

Dear All,

Rene, I disconnected the two white cables, but no progress. Same problem. I re-connected them again.

While doing this, we go a low battery alarm. I was wondering about that and started to investigate that problem as the battery is fully charged.

Now it gets bizarr. Believe it or not, the battery terminal, where the cable (negative) is connected corroded completely away and broke off finally.
See picture below.
I could hold manually down the cable to the battery and it shows full voltage again, but still left and right is not working.

Now we have two problems.

That the terminal corroded away must have something to do with the old sterling charger which Hanse wanted us to replace. Since that we have a lot of electric problems.

Any input from your side is appreciated as we can not get the expertise here, or did not find it yet.

Cheers
HanaFe

Dear Hanafe,

wow I have never seen this before!Shocked
Here are my 2cts:
a) Don't think that the corrosion problem and the new bat-bat charger are linked. The charger just does what he is supposed to, he delivers a regulated current into the battery.

b) I think that the problem is hidden somewhere in your bow thruster. There must be a constant amp drain which finally has "eaten" your negative (ground) connector.  This process must have taken some time. Is your boat permanently connected to shore power?

First of all you have to replace the battery. Then I suggest that you measure if there is any current flowing without operating your bow thruster. Start with switching the BT off at the main panel, then operate it vertically, then try and operate the horizontal. If one of these draws amps then you need to investigate the whole BT circuitry. Hopefully you will find the root cause and if you are lucky your side power problem is connected to this.

Good Luck!
Frank

Thanks Fendant for your thougts.

We are not on shore power.
First I will buy a new battery and than start to measure with an electrician.
I contacted Hanse for statement and advise and I am waiting for answer.
I will keep you guys updated, but if any one has an idea or advise, let me know.

Update

We put in a sealed acid battery as we could not get an AGM on a short notice.
All working fine now.
I am still not clear how the electrics are connected as the up and down was working without the bow thruster battery, just board and starboard not.
Anyway problem solved. I just need to think if I should go back to AGM as all other batteries are AGM, which should be better for charging.
