Hi all
We now have a couple of months of experience with our new Hanse 505, and we really enjoy living onboard. However, we experience backflow from the holding tanks back to the toalett bowl. This applies to both heads. The tanks are not full when the brown stuff flows back - not nice . Any ideas? Bjarne

Hi,
Do you have manual Jabsko pumps for pumping the "brown water" from WC bowl to holding tank? |

Hi we had the same problem last week, turned out that whilst the holding tank wasn't full, both the outlet and the ventilation pipe were blocked. When we tried to pump the toilet out, this effectively pressurised the holding tank, which the joker valve in the toilet pump couldn't take and it turned itself inside out, thereby allowing a backflow of nasty stuff into the bowl.
Once we figured out what the problem was, unblocking the holding tank outlet and ventilation pipe was relatively easy, then take the joker valve out invert it and it all works fine now. Even if your holding tank is ok, it sounds like the joker valve has inverted, otherwise you can't get a backflow. Good luck and don't forget the rubber gloves :) Paul - Night Train

We have electric Jabco deliverd by Hanse. Do we have a joker valve in this toilet as well as in the manual one?
Other possibilities? Bjarne

Hi, there must be a one way valve of some sort, as the holding tanks are higher than the toilet, we have a manual toilet but I am sure the operation is effectively the same.
The joker valve is located in the outflow pipe at the bottom of the pump, no need to take the pump apart, just take of the outflow (2 bolts) and the rubber valve is in side the bit that comes off. It should be pointing in the outflow direction Good luck

yes, afaik you have also a joker valve on the electric toilet. Over time small layers of calcium are building up on the "blades" of the Joker valve, meaning that they no longer close tightly. There are numerous proposals from vinegar, citric acid or decalcifier (like in your dish washer )before the nasty Job of replacing the valve itself ( Jabso has affordable repair kits ).
We are using in regular intervals a toilet oil to maintain a smooth surface in all the toilet rubber components. Our Italian forumites propose olive oil.

The joker valve is not very good at holding liquids back, after a very short time they all fail ,however the holding tank is designed to fill from the top so its contents can not return, what you are seeing coming back is what you have left in the long pipe to the holding tank. Answer is to pump more clean water through every time you use he toilet, that way only clean water comes back

You may be right David, but I wonder how I can avoid this with my electric toilet.
The Jabco electric first fill the bowl with water, activated by the "Fill" button. Then I press the "Flush" button and more water is pumped into the bowl before the pump discharges to the tank. The pump stops quite a long time after the bowl is empty, but, as you suggest, there is no guaranty that the hose is empty. To be safe, I should probably flush the toilet twice, but this will challenge the ridiculously low tank capacity more than I like. Bjarne

On the other side, David, when this happens, the bowl is normally filled over half ways up. The volume in the hose is probably not that big?
