Has anybody retro fitted a quick hand held chain counter. The windlass supplied is supposed to be wired for it with sensors in place but they are not connected to the socket in the forward sail locker.I would be interested in finding out how this is done.
Any thoughts or info on this would be highly appreciated Duncan

Hi Duncan!! I anchor most of the time and in the earlier days, I didn’t know what others did about knowing chain length. One sailor told me that he marks his chain with wire ties! Don’t trim them, just put about 6 of them on 6 consecutive links at known distances. They run in and out of the windlass like butter and they are very easy to see.
So, I have marks at 100, 150, 200, and 250 foot. It seems that I’m always anchoring in about 20 feet of water so I drop about 100 feet of chain, then connect my anchor bridal which adds about 10 more feet. When in doubt, I’ll drop more chain.... perhaps to the 150 mark. These cable ties have lasted all season so far! Cheap, easy, effective! That’s how I like it!! I also use zip ties. I bought a bag of small, multi-color ties and placed one color on three consecutive links every 25 feet (I did cut the ends off). I also made a key code by chaining the zip ties in color order connected to the end of windlass handle so I'd remember what length a given color represents. No zip tie has been cut in the two years they've been on the chain.

Are you sure it is not already wired to the socket as I am sure we just plugged ours in and away it went, but the dealer did it so I am not exactly Eurex what he did. We have had a couple of problems with ours. The magnet in the winch corrodes away which causes the winch to winch a meter a time. Easily fixed by plugging in the original controller until you get a new magnet. I have now drilled the gypsie deeper and encapsulated it in epoxy and had no more problems. If you do need to run the 2 magnet wires back to the plug, it is easily done.

I thought the QUICK 575 handheld device already had the counter in it? Strange. Most windlasses are set up for this to be installed pretty easily. There is already (usually) an iron insert on the rotating drum and the kit for installing the counter adds the sensor which detects this insert on rotation. You need to drill or knock out a plug (again...usually) and run the wires back to your cockpit for the controller / counter. I've done this for Maxwell windlasses, but not Quick. I had mine set up with the counter right off. I can't imagine its that difficult to add.
