Has anyone ever had a problem with fuel tank leak

I have one or so it seems. The fuel is coming from underneath the tank but I cannot understand how this can be possible to rupture these tanks.

The tank was overfilled 4 months back.Could this have anything to do with it.

Hoping at some time to spend more time sailing rather than fixing

Cheers

Hi Duncan, I had the same problem when the boat was new and I completely filled the tank for the first time.
Apparently the filler pipe had a leak somewhere and the Diesel fuel accumulated in the bilge under the tank. Here is how I fixed it:
a) I changed the crappy Hanse sensor to a reliable magnetic sensor
b) I only fill the fuel tank to 90%

I found that my sending unit gasket had warped and leaked when topped off.
Had to remove several gallons of fuel from under the tank. Once the sending unit was snugged down the issue was resolved.

RELENTESS was 2 yrs old when I took delivery and after a month of sailing, I found a few gallons of diesel fuel under the port tank and a small amount under the starboard tank.   The leak seemed to be from the fittings on top of the tank that were weeping and always wet with fuel.  I resealed the fittings with Teflon tape....no problem since.

good luck!

I thought my sending unit gasket developed yet another leak, but this time it turned out that a white plastic fitting on one of the pickup tubes cracked at the point where it exits the top of the tank, and connects to a fuel line.

This fitting/fuel line junction was tucked under the aluminum plate that holds the tank in place.

My tank shifts and expands significantly when it’s full. What happened was the clearance between the top of this fitting and the aluminum holding plate was vastly reduced, and the pressure of the full tank on the aluminum plate cracked the fitting. A leak ensued, and all that fun sucking diesel out of the tray the tank sits in.

A block of wood on top of the tank just below the aluminum
plate, should prevent this from happening again, and care not to overfill.

That was a new one for me.
