I ma having a problem with prop noise on our 445 which I believe is coming from the 3-blade flexofold prop turning while we are under sail. I do all that one should i.e. engage reverse gear after turning engine off etc. but I distinctly hear the prop turning which indicates the blades are not fully closed of course. Bizarrely they close easily by hand when I have dived the prop to check for growth of which there is none.

Does anyone have experience of this problem? Obviously it cannot be doing the gearbox any good so we have resorted to sailing in neutral with the associated increase in drag.

SD50 sail drive?  Small weird chance it could be the Cone clutch slipping?  I assume forward gear engagement under power is normal?  No delay and then sudden uptake of drive?  Would have to have put >500hrs on the sail drive for that to be likely.

On my flex-o-fold (1 season old)  it makes a fair amount of spinning noise until you engage reverse.  Once engaged, it stops immediately and you can normally come out of reverse and back to neutral ready for the next engine start.  I can think of the odd occasion I've done it twice.

Hi,

You could try to engage the reverse when the engine is on then run it in reverse for a few second. Then you turn the engine off while its running in reverse.

I had a smililar problem on another Hanse model, and it did the trick for me.

Cheers

I should have mentioned Albion is equipped with a Volvo D2-55 with their 130S saildrive. As I understand it the clutch is a plate clutch rather than cone but nevertheless a slipping clutch makes some sense. Although as Mark asked under power there is no discernible issue.

I’ll give the slight, short reverse thrust method a go. Thanks for the suggestion. That and find a way to get a Go-Pro underneath under way to take a look at exactly what is going on.

Chitchat 14/1-2019 "Folding props problems" /seileren1/545 is maybe relevant to study?
It seems that the 3-blade flexofold can turn (and thereby turn the axle in the s-drive) when under sail. ............https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJRMJuw2iU4........ shows a folded model, but maybe a Hanse owner knows something about fluid dynamics, and can tell us if a folded propeller still can turn. It seems reasonable, that water with a speed of 3-7 knots can cause some movement when passing the curved form of the Flex-o-fold, even if it is folded. The 3 blades curves in the same direction.
On youtube you can find a Flexofold (2-blade) which has a problem with folding, and then there is no doubt that the waterflow can turn it. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_adsflxy8g)
