The coolant is rising to the reservoir tank and expanding / overflowing , causing low coolant in the engine. I did hear of one case with another 575 whereby it was plumbed into the engine incorrectly when installed at the factory.

We had the local volvo dealer come and look at it and they said the wrong type of cap was fitted, this has been changed and made no difference.

Has any one had this problem / know the solution?

Maybe you have a airbubble in the cooling System !
I see the warmwaterboiler positioned above the motor. maybe the bubble is in the connection to it, as the airbubble may stay in the connecting tube.

Amaroo,

On occasions we have the low coolant warning come on when the coolant in the header tank goes below the required level. We have had a leak from the header tank and have not yet been able to track it down. This job is on the winter list. What I find is if the coolant is within the hi/low readings on the header tank all is good. If the leak caused the coolant to go below the "low level" the coolant does not run back into the engine circuit as the engine cools and you then need to top up the header and open the "filler cap" on the engine and the coolant run back and tops up the engine RPM.

Hi guys
Hot water is bigger than cold,so as the engine heats up the water expands into the header tank then as it cools its drawn back into the engine by vacume. If the water is not drawn back in its because you have a loose hose and air is being sucked in.

Hallo,

I had exactly the same problem and I am glad to inform you that the solution is VERY simple :

you have to exchange the position of the 2 caps : the transparent expansion tank and the smaller tank on the motor itself

that's it !

on my boat after this the problem never occurred again

dear Amaroo,

I checked the caps position on my boat.

The blind cap has to be on the engine expansion tank while the cap with the overpressure spring has to be on the upper transparent expansion tank.

This problem was worked out in the end the top expansion tank was plumbed in wrong when the engine was installed at the factory. The issue was covered under warranty due to it being installation error.

Hi Armaroo,

I have the same problem in my D3! Can you please tell me what the installation error was so I can fix it. as my mechanic cannot find a solution. At the end what you did to solve it?

Caps on expansion tank and extra expansion tank are not the same but can someone tell me why by changing the caps the problem is solved?
