I have now had both forward bow-pulpit stanchion bases break due to a combination of corrosion, fatigue, and load from the jib hanging up on the pulpit.  The boat is barely one year old!  I am considering modifying the pulpit in two ways.  First, curving the top bar back starting at the middle so that there is less to catch on.  Second, adding a connection between the two halves of the pulpit at the bottom (below the jib).  I know another local boat has done the latter, for similar reasons.  I know the SF bay is quite windy; however, my question is:  "am I the only one experiencing this problem?"

Re Stanchions,
This past winter I had the boat 415 shrink wrapped and put away in the usual way. In the spring we found many stanchions had sheared at the foot and broken. Essentially if you have a boat built in the past few years you have an approx 8" slug of stainless machined on one half down to a bolt diameter threaded and screwed through a plate and into a steel cuff under/inside the toe rail and the other end left as the slug that nests up into the stanchion pipe and is bolted trough. 12 of my stanchions simply sheared or weakened this winter. No overly heavy ice or snow, no signs of boatyard trauma to the shrink by possible vandals, a wooden skeleton was set up under the wrap with venting with a door. I would say some inward snugness of wrap against stanchions but to my thinking no more than my crew pulling the boat into the dock occasionally by the stanchion.
Our solution is to drill into the slug and thread in a stainless bolt, back the broken part out by tapping into it and re assembling.
Any experience like this out there?

Mine may be  al ittle different but the central post sheared off & broke the wire to the nav light as well. When I removed the pulpit I found that the nuts holding the other legs were not the correct size but were oversize & had been bedded in sikaflex to make it look as though they had been bolted down. Presumably the worker was just being lazy & it was out of site.
My solution was to drill the top & bottom of the post & pass an 8mm SS studding down the centre with a nut & washer each end. This enabled me to tighten it down hard. This is important as it takes the weight of the guardrails.
The wire now goes outside.
The picture shows the post, but not the stud. The carbon tube was for my wife- she puts the boat hook in it when in locks so she has it to hand without dropping overboard--- with the others !!!!!

Not sure if I ever posted my "solution" to strengthen the bow pulpit.  I replaced the mounting pins for the stanchions on bow pulpit. The new pins are designed for set screws, so I had to weld nuts to the pulpit tubing and re-set the height of the hole (you will see if and when you get a new-design stanchion).  I also fabricated a brace so that the stanchions on the port and starboard are sharing any shear load.  I think it will help stiffen the entire assembly.

No problems yet, but it is a bit early to claim victory.
