I've just heard that Yanmar wanted a small propeller so that the saildrive was not overloaded.
There has been some problem with a cone clutch. Any other overload problems? On my 370e I can make 8kn on full power, clean boat, 3600rpm, flat water. On 2500rpm just around 6 kn. I would like a bigger propeller but I wander if the saildrive would be overloaded. .... then again... the saildrive will probably corrode away first .

Yes, I was told something similar.
Nor was it confirmed that the SD50 was down graded as consequence. You always take a risk when increasing the capability of one component that you'll stress another. That's partly why we stick to 2,200 rpm when cruising. The only time we've pushed it to 3,000 is when trying to get round in to Bayer against the building tide. I did notice whilst away this year reversing seemed to have more control quicker in marinas.

Hi guys
The SD 50 saildrive is used with different sized engines, mine is coupled to a 40hp with no problems in 8 years. Jons 470 will have a 75 hp engine, so the chance of overloading the saildrive is greater. So with smaller engines it's probably not possible to overload. David |

Normally aspirated (none turbo'd) at that, will check if the 3200 max rpm model, as I found out from a respondee recently

Dear Sir,
I have an Hanse 470e 2007, with me for 1 year, I fell it Underpower. Do you think that the reason is to have a 18-13-3 propeller? What's your experience with the new 20-13-3?, faster?, easy to handle? What's the costs of that new propeller? Regards, Pedro Mendes Pinto FREEDOM |

If you can get 7 knots at 2300 rpm everything is fine.
Since the most important thing in a sailboat, is the motor, again 7 knots is fine. A Grand Banks is a nice option for going 10 knots...:-) I have on my Hanse 470e 2010 a Max Prop 3 blade today in 2016 they have 4 blades but never the less what is good about the Maxprop is that they are 90 % efficient in reverse, and docking is always a bit risky in new harbors.... |

Pedro,
Probably, but there's how clean is your hull too ! There are basically two calculations you can do to assess the most efficient prop size and both came up with the same answer - 20" for the 47' boat. I changed it for two reasons, first was the pitting I was experiencing on my old prop and it was during conversations I was having with various companies that lead me to discover Yanmar's wish. If you go to the beginning of this article you'll get the jist, you'll also see the cost, but this is in UK Sterling before the Brexit vote.

Hi Guys,
After a year of service, although I'll admit, the house has taken precedent this year so we've not been out for many weekends, we did our usual 5-6 weeks cruise to the Scilly Isles and back, the boats back out of the water and I can inspect the prop. The third 'manual' anode hung over the side, as our home pontoon has metal piles (but no electricity supply), appears to have done its job in that the two anodes around the prop are still present although have virtually disappeared. The prop after being jet washed, removed and cleaned up, has not suffered from any pitting, neither has the sail drive, yes the anti-foul paint has come off as expected, but where I've used filler to fill in the pit marks and covered it with a resin, no further degradation has taken place. This year I've replaced the split collar anode at the rear with the whole one, this has at least 100g more zinc so should be another benefit. But do remember to remove the split ring conversion plates before hand !
