Hi All,
Our 345 is 2 years old. The white sealant in the deck joint has gone black(ish) and mouldy(ish). I've tried a bathroom cleaner but they don't make much difference. The discolouration is quite stubborn. Anyone have any good ideas how this could be cleaned and improved? I suppose I could reseal but that is a big job and I don't think should be necessary on a new boat.

Monty:
I suggest you search the forum for this topic. Your yacht was built during the period when Hanse was using a faulty product. At least in my case, it never cured and remained sticky. It ended up as you describe. Hanse are/were replacing it under warranty. I would speak with your dealer. My dealer, JK3, did the work under warranty. Dave Festina Lente Hanse 505-17

Hi Monty,
I, too, had the same case on my Hanse built in spring 2013. After discussing for about six months with my dealer, I met with an Hanse rep at a boat exhibition, who admitted the fault which was due to a bad stock,of Sika sealant. Thereafter, the dealer replaced it under warranty terms. You bought your boat from one of the best-reputed dealers, so I'm confident it won't take that long. Brgds, Maurizio |

Hi, welcome to the crappy sealant club! As Maurizio said, all Hanse's produced in 2013 were sealed with a faulty batch of sealant, which stayed tacky and never cured. Apparently Hanse had switched away from Sika to a cheaper supplier and got their a..... burnt. The only function of the sealant is to close the gap. It has no structural importance. The deck is bonded to the hull flange with epoxy/polyester. According to the posts Hanse dealers repair this under warranty. BTW I saw the Sika production , which also supplies to major German automotive OEM's. Sika categorically denies that this was their product, they also knew the source but declined to mention the name to me. Their argument was: If something would have gone wrong, we would be in deep trouble with the car makers and you would have heard about it from a car recall.

Phil at Inspiration Marine has confirmed they will get it sorted out for me. Apparently Hanse have shrugged their shoulders on this one, so I think the cost will be borne by Inspiration which just goes to show the value of a good dealer.
