Some owners have mentioned that there rudder grooves the hull where the leading edge touches the hull. I have the RUD 34 on a 31 series boat so I cannot speak for other combinations. I feel that there is a problem with the Jefa standard rudder. I had damaged mine so needed a replacement in double quick time . Fair play to Jefa , they came up with the goods really quickly. The problem – which can be seen in the photo is that the top of the rudder does not fit the shape of the hull. One can see that the leading edge is very close to the hull , but there is a large gap at the rear. If I ever caught a rope high up on the rudder on the leading edge I could foresee real problems releasing it. My last rudder had the same angle on the top aft of the stock, but was angled down in front of the stock. This allows the rudder to be raised up about 25mm. Not a lot but closes the aft gap a lot & prevents the leading quarter touching the hull.
If I was ordering another I would ask Jefa to insert a piece in their standard mould such that this top piece could be shaped down a bit. From the jefa website it appears that they can place false fillers in the mould along the top & I would suggest if having a new rudder with time to spare it would be well worth considering & talking to Jefa |

Well, this gap does not look nice.
The gap to me is more a problem for a good waterflow, not for the rope you mention. The rudder will be much less effective with this gap! If i were you and the fault is not coming from jefa.... i would drop the rudder a little bit and would add a peace which fills this gap. It is not that big deal do add this part to the rudder, as it will not be a structural, more a cosmetic work. |

Hi,
One solution îs to add a fairing to the hull to close the gap. A small piece of structural marine foam and some glassing will do the job. I wander why Hanse didn't add this fairing. |

Friends with a Hanse 341/342 had lower the rudder and filled as Peter-Blake suggested, my friends seem to be very pleased with the enhancement. |

Samuel, at a glance it seems that your new Jefa RUD34 does not fit your boat.... hhmm?
Well, the RUD34 is quite big for a 311 series Hanse, so perhaps a smaller model would have been a better fit? Without compromising steering? (I think there is a RUD30 also). Anyway the RUD34 proved to be a perfect fit for my 342 as you can see from the pictures here: http://www.myhanse.com/rudder-size_topic3097_page7.html Ole, |
