    Posted: 08 January 2018 at 10:45
Good evening all,
I have opportunity to purchase a stainless steel Lewmar Claw anchor of same weight as the standard supplied Lewmar Delta galvanised anchor and would like to know if any other 415 owner has converted from the Delta to the Claw- I note the specs from Lewmar indicate the Claw  has about 10%better holding capacity but that aspect is not my need/concern- it appears that i would have to drill a retaining hole to fit the bow fitting and I wonder if it will fall and retrieve better or worse than the Delta.

Any comments appreciated

Peter

My advise would be to put your money into any of the new generation anchors not and old style like the claw.

Rocna, Manson supreme, Sarca Excell, Spade or Ultra are all much better options with considerably better holding power across wider bottom types than a claw.

Good morning Stephen,
thank you for your reply.
I finally came to that conclusion after several hours on the net at the weekend and am awaiting a reply from the Sarca people as to the position of the bow roller hole and any difficulty in drilling a new hole if it doesnt match- I will let you know on this forum of my eventual actions in due course. Interesting the prices difference involved from various suppliers seem to vary between nil to over 10 % eg a Rocna 20kg range is  $569-753 although I have done a freight check yet

Hi Peter,

i dont use the hole in the bow roller and instead use snap shackle abound the chain and tie that off inside the anchor locker to stop the anchor coming off the roller should windlass let go. Blase of the anchor sits under the bow roller itself so chant jump off.

that way your options on anchors is greater. I had Rocna 20kg which was fantastic and currently have Ultra 21kg which is also fantastic.

Hi again Stephen

thought I would do a follow up-after doing as much research as is possible I chose a 22 kg Sarca Excel #5 galvanized anchor for my 415 as a replacement for the original Lewmar 15kg Delta unit.

Pleasingly the existing retaining pin on the bow roller matches the top anchor shaft hole so I did not need to fit a retaining strop as you suggested.

well done, Sarca excel is an excellent anchor you won't be disappointed and perfect that it fits the bow roller without modification.

Evening Steve,
just a follow up as we have now had Sea Rambler out several times and found a the huge difference with anchoring with the Sarca Excell-after dropping anchor and doing the run back the boat now pulls up with a real jolt -standard anchor was always a "soft" landing.

Very please and again thank you for your direction
