Thanks for all the replies. We have ordered the parts and hopefully they will start work next week on the repairs. I have also purchased an isolation transformer as follows. I would like any feedback for anyone who has used on of these before.
In retrospect I reviewed changes in my marine environment over the last 12 years. The boat was pulled every 2 years for cleaning and zinc replacement. Here's what I saw. Year Description Changes 2 > 1% Anode loss 38' Sail on left and right of Stella 4 > 3% Anode loss None 6 > 3% Anode loss New 38' Sail on left. New 27 Sail on right 8 > 3% Anode loss New 37' Sail on left 10 20% Anode loss New 40' Cruiser on Right (second year). 12 100% Anode loss None. I can't say much about these numbers but they seem very suspicious. I would post new pictures but I don['t see the picture poster icon now?????? Has something changed??? |

I guess I need to use the long form for pictures. Here are the cleaned up pictures of the Sail Drive. Note how the entire zinc is gone. This had never happened in the previous 12 years. In the second picture you can see the holes from the electrolysis action. One note from my bottom painter. I always used Interlux non-metallic paint on my sail drive. He indicated that some of the paint had come off. He strongly suggested to ALWAYS clean then put a Primer Cost before the barrier coat. Mike

Good luck with it all. It’s worth bearing in mind though that there’s distinct differences between galvanic and electrolytic corrosion. The former can usually be traced to equipment onboard but the latter could be due to anything in the vicinity and has the potential to eat up metals at a truly alarming rate. Bringing in a corrosion specialist to check it all out would be money well spent.

Just to be clear, "no issues" means that the sail drive is still looking good. However, the zincs themselves barely last a year so it's at least an annual event to refresh them.
Good luck guys, that's an expensive item to have to replace!

Regarding the folding prop....
I have a 3 blade Flex-O-Fold prop. I have had my boat since 2012 and I have not yet changed the saildrive anode. Probably will this year. But I never stay connected to shore power. I have and arrangement with 3 solar panels. The fault must be either other boats or some electrical problem on yours.
