We have an issue with our folding prop (flexofold) on our Hanse 545 . On a recent overnight sail, we experienced a high pich sound from the prop during sailing, but not during motoring. Afterwards we had a diver check the prop. It was very overgrown and he cleaned it thourghly. Unifortunately, he was not able to move the prop so it was still stuck in the open position.

Any thought, advice?

Cheers

Hi
They will "fail open" ie stuck open if you leave the boat for any time. Normally you can force movement by putting the engine in gear whilst you are sailing - it is amazing how much pressure it put on those blades.

Did you put a little bit of waterproof grease on the pivot pins that hold the blades in when you last had it out as this helps?

Most likely you need to pull the boat and clean the prop. I have had a flex-fold 3 blade prop for 12 years with no problems. I know that debris can build up in the blade gears that can restrict the movement of the blades on the pins but this would only happen after several years. When I service my prop (at least every two year) I always put a small amount of white waterproof grease on the blade gears and pins. I also check to ensure the prop folds properly.

Thank you for your advice!!
The boat was lifted a year and a half ago, and the propeller was treated with grease in the gears and antifouling agent on the blades. But the boat is lightly used the last 6 months and was very overgrown according to the diver. I guess it could be a shell or barnacle stuck in the gears.
However I do not understand the high pitch sound that it made while sailing - and probabaly stuck in the open position. Once concern I had was that there is something wrong with the gearbox.
I will investigate further when I get to her in a few months.

Cheers

Yanmar has issued a technical bulletin regarding this.
"TECHNICAL BULLETIN
Ref No.: YMTQTB11-017
Date: October 18, 2011"
When you stop the engine for  sailing by the wind, first you have to set the handle in reverse position. This way the propeller blades will fold. Then after 5-10 seconds you set the handle in neutral.
Yanmar does not recommend sailing (by sail) with the lever in reverse.
The sound you hear, is the axle in the S-drive rotating (because the propeller is not  folded).
The same sound is also there when motoring, but then more difficult to hear in the noise.

"
All Yanmar marine distributors
Subjects : Yanmar Sailboat engine control lever position during sailing
under sail with engine stopped.
b. Folding propeller: (including GORI Over-drive propeller)
When sailing under sail with engine operation stopped put control lever into Reverse position,
this to operate the folding propeller to fold close blade and output-shaft stops from rotating.
After this operation put the control lever back into Neutral."

I will try to upload the bulletin to myhanse.

A few Hanse owners also would like to know about another bulletin, telling them to change the dipstick in the SD50, because the oil level marker is marked too high up.

You may be wiser after having used the "search" function in the myhanse homepage.
Just change the default search period from "6 months" to "all", and a lot of useful information is available to you!

Just tried to upload the service bulletins to "manuals and drawings", but no luck.
I have the bulletins mentioned above, so if another member wants to try to upload them, send me a PM with your e-mail adress.
The bulletins are adressed to Yanmar distributors, and I suppose they are to remain a big secret to the owners of Yanmar products, so there may be a legal problem by showing them?

I have changed the dipstick on my S-drive, and Yanmar even had the nerve to charge me for the replacement dipstick eventhough it was not my fault that they had made an error!

Anyway, the dipstick-problem is mentioned in earlier posts in this forum.

I just googled the SD50 bulletin, and it is on the net. The Dipstick bulletin has Ref. GTB 2009016 and date: September 16 2009, so it may be public as well.
Update: Just did the job for you:
https://www.sarabella.ch%2Fdownloads%2FYanmar-Technical-Bulletin-Oil%2520level_SD50.pdf&usg=AOvVaw1yebfvSyKFn046uycXiY5t

Tecnical Bulletin Ref No:GTB2008004 Date:February 29, 2008 can also be googled
this is also adressed to Yanmar distributors, but did YOU know about it? (About the use of biodiesel)

Am I finished? Naah - somewhere there is also a technical bulletin telling you that use of synthetic or semi-synthetic motor oil in your 3JH4E and some other Yanmar motors will void the warranty.

"Till samtliga Yanmar marinmotorer - utom till de nya BY-motorerna där syntetolja föreskrivs - skall en ren mineralolja användas.Alla former av syntetoljor – hel eller del – är förbjudna att använda. Dessa oljor kan skada motorerna svårt och orsaka haverier."

Do you understand swedish? - if not, it says: (Only BY motors are excluded) Only use pure mineral oil, never synthetic or semi-synthetic oil. Can damage your motor.

Thank you for your insights Captain.

When this occured, I did check whether this sound came from the propel axel turning on my volvo engine, unfortunately it did not. It sounded like it came from the gearbox itself - but I am not certain. I tried it in both the locked position and in the rotatting position, locking and unlocking by setting the gas handel in revers position and visually inspecting the rotating axel.
Using engine it was no sound. I guess its still a mystery.

Cheers

Hej seileren1
The bulletin from Yanmar arrived in 2011, by then I had sailed for 5 years with my gear-lever always in Reverse under sail. I also had sounds in reverse from the gear when the propeller turned. I assume, that the reason Yanmar issued the bulletin, was that some wear on the drive was caused by this rotation.
You may consider, that the water-resistence is turning the propel on your boat, and thereby the drive (and the gear) both in Forward and Reverse, because your propeller is stuck.
Rotation of the gear can alone be caused by propeller movement.
Regards Kjeld
