Hi All,
I'm after opinions for which way to go with an autopilot. I have Raymarine gear throughout my boat so am limiting my choice to Raymarine but I'm between the cut off of the official recommendations. EV -100 sail with a wheel drive - $1600 AUD or EV - 200 with add on linear drive - $3300 AUD My Hanse 400 is right on the limit of the displacement recommended for the EV-100 , but comes with the balanced rudder. So the lighter loads on the wheel make the EV - 100 likely to be adequate. I'm not planning on sailing round the world, mostly flat water racing and so use the autopilot simply to hold straight during sail set up when light handed or if something is jammed. I will likely do some coastal cruising with the odd coastal overnight race. I'd obviously carry spares for an overnight race. But cant afford to carry a spare linear drive, however with the EV-100 wheel with its simple mechanism of a motorised belt driven wheel. I could carry 5 spare belts and 2 motors spare - all likely within my budget.
Anyone got any good or bad experiences with either. Cheers Craig |

No problem for the EV-100.
But it will not be fast enough on waves or shifting winds. I had a WP4000 for many years more ore less same displacement, but heavier wheel. Almost never used it for sailing, but ok on motor or as a second hand for short periods. |

I both cruise and race. In the US, racing PHRF, you can't use autopilot generally, unless you are sailing shorthanded (2) or solo. I have had the wheel driven sytem on 3 boats and the belowdecks system on my 370 since new in 2006. The difference is night and day. The below decks (probably today's linear system) is far superior to the wheel steering system. In a storm, I can hide behind my dodger (or even belowdecks) and my system, controlled by my remote, will do everything I ask of it. That would not be true of the wheel driven system.

Craig, I'm currently
installing an autopilot on my 400 also . Went for
the Raymarine Evolution Autopilot EV-200 Sail met p70 ACU200 EV1 Pack. Initially
wanted to match with a Raymarine linear drive, but decided on Jefa 150 KgM
autopilot direct drive unit type I. Mainly
because the linear Drive will not fit in the compartment behind the steering
pedestal. I saw
pictures where somebody installed a linear drive inside the boat, with the drive
coming through a hole in the deck. Had to
be sealed real well etc. It
comes at a cost but I decided to stick
with how Hanse designed it, with Jefa. Peter. |

Many thanks Peter,
I have been grappling with how to fit the linear drive. As you say ,not enough room. Im going to price one today and see if I can stretch my budget. Many thanks for advice Craig |

I
would definitely go for a below deck pilot. I use to have a Hanse 371 with the
st4000 wheel pilot. It was OK under engine and in light winds but sailing in
windspeeds above 10-12knots was impossible. I upgraded to a S1G system with a
type 1 linear drive from Raymarine and the difference was huge. Today I have a
Hanse 400 with Simrad autopilot + the jefa drive and it works almost as good as
the Raymarine system. If
you think that the Jefa drive is to expensive I would consider using the
Raymarine linear drive (I guess type 1 will do but it’s on the edge). The
normal mounting area is probably not big enough and I would consider mounting a
separate tiller arm below deck. There should be enough space between the rudder
tube and upper bearing – but you need to remove the rudder and let a mechanical
workshop machine a slot for a wedge in the rudder shaft. Still I thing this
would be less than buying the jefa drive and you will get a more protected
position for the drive. |

To compare apples with apples notice that the 150kgm are at the extreme rudder positions, which are never used in normal sailing. Around the center the torque of the unit is "only" 80kgm.
I don't claim that 80kgm are not enough. What I am saying is to use this figure for force comparison. |

Note that a Jefa drive consumes around 2 ampere on flat water vs a wheel pilot around 0.5 ampere.
This is quite a lot when sailing. Do not know about the linear drive. But it is very nice to have a more solid inboard system compared to the belt mechanism.

Many thanks everone.
I have decided to build a stainless bracket to attach to the rudder shaft below decks. I'm then planning to then use the linear drive. |
