Hello Colin, I have exactly what you have stated below, one horseshoe with light on the outside of the port pushpit and a Danbouy on the inside also fixes onto the port pushpit. Works fine. Michael

In general it is better not to have Dan Buoys sticking up in the air on the port push pit - put them on the port push pit instead.
The reason?
You don't want to impale the guy coming to your rescue from a helicopter.
At least in the UK, all search and rescue helicopters have their winch and primary door on the starboard side. The pilot who is navigating/hovering the helicopter will be in the right hand seat. If at all possible they will ask you to sail the yacht close hauled on port tack and they will approach you over the port quarter and land the guy on the winch wire over that pushpit - this way the guys operating the helicopter winch and flying it can see what they are doing much more easily. The less clutter sticking up on the port side of the boat, the better.
If you look around in UK waters you will see that all racing yachts and most others have their man overboard gear on the starboard quarter for this reason.
Hope it's never needed - but worth knowing.
Not sure, but I guess this may hold true for other countries' search and rescue helicopters.

Look at one of the Lifesling systems at www.landfallnavigation.com/lifesling2. You can see it in operation at www.answers.com/topic/lifesling-system. Additionally, there's a new "throw stick" on the marget that allows one to throw an inflatable horseshoe accurately some 75-100'.

Hi
please note that you can also buy a inflatable dan-boy
This requires much less space. But I'm not update on how relaiable thay are. I guess they are good, if they would not be for sale
The same is the case for the horse shoe

My Danbouy has a retractable flagpole and hence do not cause any problem for Chopper rescue should that be the case. |
