I need to order new self-tacking jib for my 445.
The choice is between M.S Triradial Fibercon Pro Radial cut or 410AP Dacron cross cut. Price difference is not much in the quote from the sailmaker. I'm often cruising short-handed or with kids so I sail conservatively. I sail both in summer and winter in the Med, sometimes the winds in Aegean are around 30 knots so I reef my furling jib to reduce the sail area. I never race so speed is not a problem for me, I would much rather have a sail that would last longer, allow me to sail with reefed sail, and in general would be heavy construction, the one I could trust in a blow. What is better in this case - tri-radial or cross-cut? I want to place an order with Q Sails (Hood sails) in Izmir. |

I am a little surprised that the fibrecon is not much dearer than the dacron. I purchased a tri radial fibercon mainsail for my 311 & it was dearer than even the laminate version & nearly twice the price of a dacron. I was sold it on the basis that unlike a laminate sail it could be folded into the stackpack without the problems of creasing that a laminate has & would last a lot longer. (I wanted it initially for cruising but also for racing, possibly next year). This would suggest that it would be suitable for a jib where it would have a tendency to flog during tacks etc. The dynema thread should also resist stretching far better. I believe that the dynema is layered with the warp biased in one direction more than the other and I was advised to go for radial. On that basis I would suggest a radial cut for the jib. I was also advised that it would be better for reefing (I wanted 3 reefs) than a laminate so I assume that would be better than a dacron as well. If you can get a tri radial Fibercon cloth for a reasonable price I would go for it. My sail maker was Hyde & I spent a lot of time discussing other features such as mast bend etc & i am happy with the sail. However, you have already chosen your preferred sailmaker so go with him
