Hello all,

I'd like to get a stronghold point where I can clip on added just outside the main hatch.
I was thinking on the side just outside of the vertical door.

Would it be safe to add a strongpoint there with 4 large self tapping screws into the hull there?

Where do others put theirs?

Regards,
Simon

My strongpoint is on the upstanding underneath the vertical washboard.

Sounds like where I want to put mine.

Do you have a photo of it at all?

I think you are always better off having a nut on bolt on your secure point. I have a folding pad eye fitting below the cockpit locker hatch and also one aft, positioned on the side leading on the access to the bathing platform. You can get to this from behinda via the rear hatch inside the aft cabin. At least you can on the H345 and I'm guessing you can do so on the 385 aswell. I personally wouldn't want to trust a harness line on a fitting secured by self tappers.

Good point, but then I need one near the main hatch out into the cockpit. I'm unsure where I could get a bolt through solution there?

I don't have a photo Simon. It is a U bolt positioned vertically about 25 mm up from the deck. The bolt ends go through and I assume are accessed from within the engine compartment after raising the steps into the saloon.

Another similar U bolt is where Monty indicates.

I think the U bolts are about 30 or 40 mm.

If you can get behind the main hatch area via the engine compartment that would work. Just a couple of other thoughts. A u bolt sticking out especially there sounds like it could become an annoying toe stubber as well! The folding pad eye looks neat and will prevent this. Also presumably the potential use of the harnessing line can be forseen therefore if you have trouble fitting the eye near the main hatch you could fit it at the cockpit locker and lead the harness back to the hatch ready for clipping on before you emerge. Imho the hanse cockpit is a pretty secure place to be and harnessing up once you are in it is safe enough.

Pad eyes are a nice neat solution if sufficiently strong. I've never stubbed anything on the U bolt. It is positioned close to the port corner.

Yeah it's just a requirement for the ARC rally that you have clip on points directly at the hatch.

I'll have another look around. Just checked the engine room and I can't see a good place of how to get from there up to the cockpit floor so maybe it's different on the 385.

I'm almost thinking of putting a padeye on the top (solid wood) step just inside the hatch to one side and using that. That step isn't going anywhere quickly and I can tuck it out the way to one side (or even under the step).

I don't know how you can use the inside top step. Won't that interfere with the washboards?
