I am having a problem where my bow battery is not charging sufficiently. This became uncomfortably apparent when I was trying to get out of a tight slip in high wind and the thruster was overpowered by the breeze. I now know that the battery is only getting to 11.1 volts. Does anyone know if the 415 has a battery combiner or separate battery chargers for each set of batteries?

I saw the post about battery replacement and I am not surprised as I could not understand how the battery could come out if it needed to be replaced.

The bow thruster battery is charged by a battery to battery charger located behind the panel under the chart table. This should be a Sterling 50A charger now. Originally it was a 15A charger and there was a problem with one or two catching fire (I think). Anyway there was a recall several years ago to replace the 15A version with the 50A. This seems to work well on High Time. I believe the recall also applied to the 385.

I expect all boats after the recall (2014?) are fitted with the 50A charger from new.

If you are only getting 11V then your B to B charger, or associated wiring, is probably faulty or maybe the battery itself has failed.

Thanks Roger. The boat is a 2016 so I hope that battery is still good given the difficulty involved in replacing it.

Hi Tom,

if your battery is an AGM type and shows 11.1. V it is unfortunately pretty dead.

Sorry a bit late on this thread as my 415 Forum subscription was missing.

Anyway. On my 2013 the B to B charger has been downrated to 20 amps but had a 10v fuse in the charge line close to the battery. My battery was dead due I think to a dead short when the brushes on the motor failed as well as poor charging. I replaced the Hanse fitted AGM with an Optima spiral wound AGM as these have a higher CCA rating than a normal AGM. Due to my many electrical/battery/charging issues I fitted a Smartguage digital battery monitor. I now appear to have opposite problem to the start of this thread in that the gauge occasionally says the battery voltage is 15v. Sorry guys but I can't get my head round that when the B to B charger is set to 13v.

How is the B2B set to 13V? The only manual setting on the Sterling 50A unit that is fitted to High Time is the battery type. This should (probably) be set to AGM but you need to check the literature for the Optima you have to see what is recommended. There may also be more than one option for AGM type so also check the B2B manual.

The B2B is a 'smart' charger and operates a 3 (or maybe 4) stage charging regime. It is possible, if the battery type is (wrongly) set to Wet Lead Acid, that the voltage may be allowed to rise to 15V but for any type of AGM this is too high.

I suggest you check your B2B to see what battery type it is set to. If it is correctly set to AGM and you are seeing 15V for more than a few minutes I would suggest the B2B is faulty and likely to cause dangerous gassing in the battery.
