Has anyone had all their standing rigging replaced on their Hanse, as an end of life requirement
and if so after how many years was that? I am thinking its likely time to do this but I am being told a variety of stories.

I replace mine at 10 years, mainly because the jib roller had failed, and I plan to keep the boat another ten years or so. The new shrouds have larger turnbuckles, making it easier to tension the rigging - and now I am keeping them better lubricated. Furler is now Harken Mk IV, much better.
I believe general rule of thumb is 10 years, but this obviously depends on usage. I know someone who recently lost the lot - mast included, luckily they had recently had a rigging inspection so the insurance company came good, but total bill was over 35k AUD. My rigging plus furler was about 11k AUD.

My boat is entering its 13th year. I had a rig survey at 5 years which resulted in a new forestay. At the
same time I had the rig adjusted to have the mast tip raked forward 400mm which made handling
better & improved performance.
I had the rigging changed at 8 years as I had rather hammered the boat in heavy weather & covered nearly 20K miles. Old age has since calmed me down a bit. I had a rig survey report at 12 years which resulted in another forestay. For some reason the facnor furler tends to cause a twist in the shackle joining forestay to mast as well as trying to un-strand the wire at the head |

Thanks for the feedback guys.
I had a rigging inspection last year (12 years since new) when the rigger replaced a lazyjack fitting and he said the rig looked fine. His only concerns were the main halyard and the top bearing on the forestay, which turned out was missing. I replaced the halyard and put a bearing in the forestay which appeared to never have been fitted from new and was the cause of the heavy furling. I was speaking to a fellow sailing club member last weekend and he said his rigging was being changed because its what insurers expect. I am going to speak to my insurer but I wanted to be armed with any data on this so I can answer any technical questions they may pose with knowledge of some facts. Have either of you had anything from your insurers or spoken to then about what they expect? |
