Hi

Having just sold my mobo, we're looking to get back to sailing.  I quite fancy the 301's, I've seen a few on the internet and they have 10hp but some have 18hp.  Are the 18hp a factory upgrade when purchased or have the 301's been upgraded during their lifetime ?

Ideally we're looking for 18hp as we would be sailing around the Bristol Channel and would like the extra hp.  Also, any views on their suitability when sailing with young children ?

Cheers

Stu

Hi Stu,
When I bought my 301 in 2002 the 18 hp Volvo was a factory option and I specified it from new .I know the 9hp Volvo will drive the 301 well enough in moderate conditions and there is not a great  difference in speed in flat seas but in steep seas the 18 hp gives much more punch to drive through.I believe it to be an excellent option. For your info  my average consumption over the season is 1.05 litres per hour.My normal cruising revs are 2000.With a clean bottom in smooth conditions I get the following speeds -!500 revs 4.1knots,2000 revs 5.6knots,2500 revs 6.4 knots, with a standard fixed prop.
David.

Hi Stu
I can confirm Davids comments. I have the Volvo MD2020 19Hp with Kiwi feathing prop and motor generaly at 2000 RPM which gives me just over 5 knots. I would say I am over motorised but on the two ocations I was caught out, I was pleased to be able to punch into the wind and waves even if I was down to 3.5 knots at 2600 RPM
