Dear All,

My Sail Drive is currently being serviced and they are suggesting that I should think about replacing the 3-bladed prop with a 2-bladed prop, as this it is more efficient. From reading up, it seems that they are indeed correct that the 2-bladed prop is more efficient. However, 3 blades seem to give better acceleration and would seem to be a bigger advantage for general manoeuvring and maintaining speed in a chop.

In my case, ease of manoeuvring is a significant consideration as we are in a very tight marina and I do not have a bow thruster! In any case the loss of efficiency seem so be minimal (up to 1/4 of a knt?).

Can anyone give me a good reason why I should consider switching to the 2-blades?

Many thanks
IgnaD

Hi,

I red two years ago a comparing article of propeller tests with several brands and both 2-, and 3 blades versions included. Difference between 2 and 3 blade was not clear in all brands, and as you said features may counter the speed in many case. For you who prefer manouvering cabablity the price would be only general reason for choosing 2 blades.

Best Regards
Kari

Suggest you look at a KIWI prop.  Three blades, feathering and adjustable.  Best price and service of any prop manufacturer.  You can order direct from KIWI in AU.

My philosophy: if it wasn't broke, don't fix it. You were likely just fine with what you have so find somewhere else to spend the money.... JMHO ;)

Hi,

I would spent the money to keep the propeller clean. Even a few barnacles destroy the specs of any propeller and especially the most efficient ones. Some diving equipment is a good investment.
