Hi. This is my first post, so hello every one.
Our 350 should arrive soon, a replacement for our long-serving Hunter Channel 32. She will be based at Torquay, South Devon.
I have quite a few questions, but one that I need to sort out soon is the position for the life raft.
We have bought a new Sego canister raft, with a steel holding frame. I have test sailed a 350 and spent some time looking over it, but I am not sure of the best location.
For various reasons we are having the mainsheet taken, direct from close to the end of the boom,  to a single point in the cockpit - not to a traveller. This goes, hopefully, with the rest of the specification which I have chosen, and which I would be happy to describe and explain another time.
This leaves the space above the hatch cover as a possibility for the raft. But it seems this is a bolt-on hatch cover, and I not sure how it would take the weight of a raft. Maybe the raft hilding frame would have to straddle the hatch cover and sit on the main roof.
The other place seems to be on the pushpit. But the pushpit  does not return very far around the rear, and so has little room for the raft.
Has anyone got any suggestions. Or, even better, has anyone actually fitted a raft yet?

On my 342 we have the liferaft cradle on the hatch cover.  The Hatch cover is held in place by screws and Sikaflex.  Hanse UK installed it and said they have done several like that.

I would not be to worried by mounting the raft on the hach cover. This is designed to stand on (hopefully!) and the weight of a man is hopefully much more then the weight of the raft.
Just make sure that there is nor conflict for the bolts and hatch under the cover.

If you are based in Torquay are you having your boat commissioned in Plymouth.
 
I would be interested in knowing what spec of instruments you have chosen and also prop type.
 
We have a 430 due for commisioning in Plymouth come July / August.

We are actually having our boat commissioned in The Hamble. The main reason for going there is that they will be taking my old boat in part exchange (hopefully it will sell before the new one arrives, at a higher price than the PX), and I felt it would sell more easily in the Solent area. So I sailed the old boat over in December and left it with Hanse UK/Michael Schmidt.

 

Having been in the Torbay area for quite a long time, we spent 2 years in Sutton Marina, Plymouth for a change, but eventually came back to Torquay. That was mainly because the travel time for us from Malvern was quite a lot longer than to Torquay. We have been back here 3 years now. I prefer Plymouth to Torquay as a town!

 

Lucky you with a 430. I choose the 350 because I sail solo about half of the time (wife tolerates sailing rather than embraces it) and felt more confident about this length.

 

Ref Spec. I have been more concerned about ease of handling. I have had the odd back problem, when it locks suddenly. It happened once on a boat and it made me think. So I have gone for the ball bearing slides for the mainsail, with lazy jacks and an electric winch, plus bow thrusters. ( For ease of main sail handling I fitted in-mast reefing, Selden Rig with Maxi Roach sails, which was excellent on my old boat and easy to handle, but the Hanse in-mast solution is a standard mast with an add-on reefing system, which I don’t like) Also, I am taking the main sheet to a centre point on the cockpit floor – I will forsake a bit of sail tweaking for having the main sheet to hand on either tack and having more space in the cockpit.

 

Ref instruments. I have asked Hanse to leave the basic electrics loose, as I do not like the standard position on the 350, where they are on the rear edge of the comings, almost level with the wheel. I will choose the best position when it arrives in Hamble. I am having the usual wind, GPS etc. I am thinking of a reasonably large screen GPS mounted in front of the wheel, which will be a repeater for the instruments most of the time. If so, the instruments will hopefully go on the exterior of the cabin bulkhead, facing the wheel. But the actual type and position will be decided with Hanse UK’s electrician. I always had AutoHelm and Raytheon before, but Hanse are on Simrad, and I suppose compatibility is the key thing.

 

Do you ever come to Torbay?

We are based in Totnes so we quite often go to Torbay / Torquay, Torquay has improved over the past 5 years especially the marina with the new bridge and lock for the inner harbour.
 
It sounds like you have got the boat spec sorted out for your requirements. We are still delibeating over the instruments spec as up to date the Simrad IS20 kit has not been seen except at shows and in displays, so we may go for Raymarine.
 
I will keep in contact and hope to see you in Torquay in the future.
 
On the web site you can use personal mail for messages in stead of posting.

This is our solution to the liferaft problem ... We have been moored down in Hamble Pt for the last week getting final work completed and Hanse have informed us that customers are asking for the same solution on their new boats after seeing Doris!

Smart solution!
 
We have ordred the bathing-platform because we have small children so if our liferaft (not bought any yet) are as big as yours if would`n be able to place it like this, but it seems as the best solution... It will get very big at the pushpit indeed...
 
Maybe the best solution for us with bathingplatform it to have it "standing" insteed of "laying it down" as you have done. I guess you have done som thinking about thisBig%20smile

your photos are very interesting.
As we ordered the folding rear seat, we will have to fit the raft vertically. Do you see a problem with that?
Did you have to move the electrics to the other side of the transom?
And what are your first impressions???
