Hi All,

I clipped a rock and now the rudder has moved up and rubs against the hull. I can see that a white plastic ring has cracked and there is some movement in the rudder.

Next month I am going to pull it out of the water to replace the plastic ring and possibly service the bearings and check for damage.

From looking at the drawings provided by Jeffa is looks like the 388 is fitted with a fixed roller bearing but in the video I found on the net shows a removable self-alligning bearing. So I am confused which one is correct?

Does anyone know which one would be fitted and possibly the part number?

Thanks

Can you send pictures of the damage?
Is the crack on the upper our lower bearing?
There’s on the top of the rudder shaft a aluminum ring fixed with 2bolts to prevent the rudder come upwards ( the JEFA rudder is normally floated)
When you release this bolts a bit you can push the rudder a bit down and fix it.
When you are out the water you can check the bearings.

If you search on You Tube for Jefa rudder bearing replacement you will will find a great 6 minute video by Jefa showing all the parts and how all is put together.

We dropped the rudder slightly for maintenance to add some sealant to hull join as recommended but noticed the lower bearing had a crack in white plastic bearing. No vibration or symptoms but replaced bearing anyway to be on safeside.

It took a couple of hours and was pretty straightforward job.

If you hit a rock I would also check for any other damage to be safe.

Thanks, can you tell me. Was that on a 388?

It's just that the video I have found is for a self alligning bearing and not a fixed double bearing like the one on a 388.

Hi,

This was on my 418

The video 'Jefa Rudder and bearing service' below is the one I found very useful and helped me through the process of dropping the rudder.

Good luck.
