optimistically I went to the sailmaker to have him fit a 3rd reef in the main of my 400. Now I can't figure out how to run the reefing line as it is only 2 rollers in the top front of the boom (for reefs) and one in the lower part (for outhaul).

Has anybody out there a solution??

Thanks in advance

Have you read this topic on the 461/470 forum?

You're not the first to grapple with this problem.

Thank you a lot ! SmileSmileSmile. Problem maybe not entirely solved as it seems I have to give up single line reefing,  but some very good workarounds at least.

Yes, but please keep us posted on your solution for you 400, as some of us may be following in your footsteps.

Do you have the 4th (spare) sheave at the forward end of the boom for a line turning downward (so you can at least reef the leech)?  I'm hoping it is there on my boom but have never checked.

How about using the first reef line for the third reef when necessary.

that is an idea as the line runs on the same side, but there are two objections...the first is that the 3rd reef is maybe 10-20 m longer in terms of rope, and the other is that you can never swap once you are sailing, so you have to swap before.  then you do not have 3 reefs, but no 2 and 3....

Better go for the double line solution I guess..or Sparcraft must come up with a solution, but suppliers never read this forum, do they?

I also want to put a 3rd reef in the mainsail of our 411. Our boom has the option to put an extra line in for the 3rd reef. At this moment I am hestitant to put it in since it will be a very long line when sailing under normal conditions.

Up to now I am used to put the first reef line in the third (on another boat). I haven't done this at sea however. I still see it as an option when you want to use the second reef to also prepare the third reef by lowering the mail sail (completely) and using the 1st reef line.

I also have all my reef lines at the same side. The reason for this is that the sails are always to the same side and the reef line doesn't touch any part of the sail.
