Just been looking at the Hyde Sails website and see that they have uploaded the film they made last year featuring Grey Goose - I have replaced both the main and jib with tri-radial cruising laminate sails from Hyde.
I have no connection with the loft other than they have used the boat for this film and also for their still shots in the current magazine adverts.
After the advertising shots of their factory in the Philippines there are 2 or 3 minutes of GG out on Southampton Water one breezy but sunny evening - just makes me want to get out there again!

It looked good indeed! Were you aboard when they were shooting the film?

Hi
nice film. But it seems a bit strange to make a commercial with the main reefed?
How much wind was it during the filing?

Jof,
How are you finding your Hyde sails a few months in? Which range did you go for?
I am seriously considering ordering a self tacking jib for Scorpio from them I'm inclinded to go with cruising laminate from their Voyager Race series.
Your view would be very welcome.
Thanks,
Ed

Ed,
I had Quantum build a kevlar Fusion X self-tacking jib and it is awesome. Jeff Thorpe, our local Quantum rep measured dimensions very carefully to build the sail as big and with as much roach as possible at the head, using vertical battens. The combination of the strong, low-stretch material and the extra fabric at the head of the sail produces a very powerful sail that can be sheeted in very flat when needed. The sail has beautiful shape and furls nicely. The price was reasonable, compared to alternatives offered by other lofts. It makes the standard self-tacker look like a toy sail. The only negatives so far are that the low cut foot sometimes needs to be skirted over the lifelines and that it just doesn't seem right to roller furl such beautiful high-tech material. If you would like more info, please let me know. |

Javelin,
Sounds like your sailmaker hit the nail on the head. The added roach is exactly what your boat needs, greatly improves the slot and powers the front of the boat for better balance. Actually furling these high tech sails is one of the best ways to store them. They don't like furling! Enjoyed meeting you at Strictly Sail. Rich |

Javelin,
I actually meant to say "they don't like folding" |

Hi Javelin, could you possibly let me have your sailmaker's details? I wouldn't mind getting a quote for a new self tacking jib for our boat here in Cyprus. |

In reply to your enquiry, Ed, I am very happy with the Hyde sails.
The main is coming up to two years old and still in great shape with no signs of wear, albeit that we tend to stick around the Solent area and so have probably only covered about 1,500 miles with it in a maximum of F7/8. The only concern is that it is a stiffer material and so the standard sail bag is a very tight fit and has worn badly in a couple of places and the zip stitching is beginning to go as it copes with the strain.
The jib is 15 months old and great - a useful improvement on standard, I feel, with three vertical battens to support an increased roach. It furls very neatly.
Don't know about any particular range as such - they used a Dimension Polyant cruising laminate with a tri-radial cut for both sails. They both look very good.
I was out yesterday in great conditions from Lymington to Gosport with two people new to the boat (and Hanses generally) on board and they were very impressed with the overall performance and speed - but then we know all about that, don't we!
