    Posted: 12 December 2021 at 17:54
Hi everybody,

I'm a new owner of a Hanse 400e of 2009 with a Sparcraft mast.

I noticed on my boat that the blocks at the base of the mast  are not perfectly  aligned with the sheaves on decks. See picture below:

I tried to rotate the pins where the blocks are attached:

but they seem fixed.

Are they actually fixed in the collar of the mast, or it's hard to move them because after all these years the salt, the reaction of iron/alluminium soldered them?

Is there any hope to rotate the pins?

Thank you in advance for your comments,
Raimondo

On the 370 those pins rotate so I suspect there is some corrosion causing them to stick.  Possibly some hot water may help dissolve whatever is in there, but watch the fiberglass.

We have sparcraft mast on our 320 and the pins can rotate.

I have 400e with Sparcraft., and had exactly the same problem. The pins should rotate in the base. Try something  like boiling water first, followed by Iniox or CRC 66, or maybe WD40.
Take the block off and insert a suitable screwdriver blade through the hole then rotated the pin back and forth until freer.
Good luck.

Thank you for your reply.

I did some resarch in the meanwhile and it seems that the mast I have (Sparcraft S622) uses a mast step with pins model number NG3-21 that have an hexagonal base that fits in the mast step and therefore they do not rotate.
I attach a picture of the pins (the only one I found on Internet) from which we get the confirm of the hexagonal base:

A professional rigger confirmed the fact.
Maybe some mast used different mast steps or pins.

If anybody has other information I would be happy to hear.

Thanks,
Raimondo

Makes sense to me.
My pins definitely don’t rotate.

My 2007 build also has Sparcraft S622. The recesses in the mast base plate are probably not hexagonal, as after releasing corrosion between pin and base it was relatively easy to rotate using a screwdriver through the 8mm pin hole.  Corrosion between steel pin and Aluminium base casting because of salt water is to be expected, but will stop the pin rotating.
I don't believe the hex head on the pins is stopping it rotating.

I think you might find that Rigrite pins are hex collar, but Sparcraft is round collar. You can find pictures of sparcraft pins in their catalogue.

Hi,

I would like to correct my self.

I spoke with the Italian distributur of Sparcraft telling the problem of my base blocks that did no rotate.
I gave him photos of the base and the collar and he assured me that the pins are round and that the system is designed to allow the pins to rotate to allow the correct aligniment of the base blocks.

So I used anti-limescale products as he suggested and specially I used the heat-gun.

Then I succeded to rotate the pins (it was not that easy, but eventually it worked out).
So now I have the base blocks perfectly aligned with the organizers.

I hope this will be useful for other sailors too.
