I notice that at least two 415’s participated in the ARC. I’m wondering if any of those boats are on this forum. If so, what did you have to do to your boat to get her ready for offshore work? Thanks. Hope we can all use our boats soon!

Hi Ilkhanse,
I am waiting to pick up my 418 to do the ARC back to Australia so my specific advice is limited. I did the arc on my current boat (a Sigma 38) so can give general advice. Safety. You will need an extensive list of safety gear that is clearly shown on the World cruising website. Chafe. This is a major for all boats and you need a plan for managing this with all sails and lines. Gear. We needed to upgrade some of our lines, blocks and rig better down wind systems such as preventers and tweekers. We sailed with main and poled headsail the whole time but for next time I would go for a dedicated downwind sail, probably an asymmetric on a furler. Power and water. You will have a bigger draw on power than ever before so additional generation is essential. We used a towed generator but next time I think I will just use more solar. Water was not a major issue for us but we used very little. Good luck and I might see you at the ARC David

hello with my 375 I didn't make the Arc, but I crossed the canaries, the cape verde, the antilles....
ENERGY: I had solar panel 350w and aquagen IV hydrogenerator in trailer (no more solar panel is useless because the load is too limited, few hours of sunshine because we are heading west and the sails hide them). SAIL: self-tacking jib, furling gennaker, and asymmetric spy with sock. we have used the gennaker and spinnaker for very little time. but still the self-tacking jib with a spinnaker pole and we always kept our mainsail. The wind was 15 to 30 knots. AUTOMATIC PILOT: (We had 2) I replaced the simrad AC 12 by the AC42 and the RC 40 by the RC 42. I kept them as a backup, I had 2 AP24 displays and two jefa DD1 units. the rudder forces are very important and broke the screws of the DD1 unit. and also damaged the upper bearing. do a good overhaul of your rudder. If I have to do a transat again, I will only use one autopilot, but I will use a HYDROVANE windvane gear. This has the advantage of not consuming energy and, above all, it acts as an emergency rudder. COMMUNICATION : we had iridium go with an external antenna. XGATE software, qtvlm for routing, and gribs. opencpn. ENGINE: not used, but we had a full tank and 5 x 20l jerry cans of diesel. WATER: tank 320l and 80 bottle of 1, 5l. at the arrival there was half of the water tank left, but the dishes were made with sea water. crossing time 17 days. DRISSE GRAND VOILE : important wear and tear and have to be watched twice. FISHING, don't be afraid to take lots of octopus lures.....because we lost a lot of them but we fished a lot. FOOD: provisioning in the canaries because in Cape Verde there is not much Have a nice sail. Translated with www.DeepL.com/Translator (free version) |

I didn't have a storm sail because I don't have a detachable forestay.
The self-tacking jib can be used up to 25 knots above it, you can furl it a bit. there are storm bag delta sails : https://www.storm-bag.com/ but a mainsail with 3 reefs is imperative and I've already used it.... |

I was booked for ARC 2020. It withdrew for a range of reasons that year. I also completed it on A 445 in 2017 and fitted out my 415 as a result of lessons learnt.
Fischer panda neo genset, water maker (not 12v). Blue water runner sail, extra Jerry cans, iridium Go, life raft lifted to the push pit. Extensive Spare parts for rigging. These were the main preparations. Andrew

Hello, i joined for 2020, but have postponed to 2021, due to Covid19. With regard to equipment, I followed the requirements form ARC.
I do not have a storm jib, from reason given by another sailor on this string, but I have 3 reefs in the main. I will have code 0 and genaker. From personal reasons, i will buy drinking water and thus requirement for watermaker is reduced. I am installing manual pumps both for fresh and salt water. I have an Eføy unit for el power. If you want to exchange more info we can go to email. BR from Tor |
