I was up the mast to day checking the rigging and the head of the Jib foil looked a bit strange, as I had not looked at it before can anyone tell me if it is correct?

Hi
Yes the tape is broken and the plastic cap is a bit deformed, but I did not expect to see it open at the top. I expected a closed top that would have stopped the rain water going in. Ken

Reply from Sparcraft
Further to
your query and according to the picture, your top cap is
cracked. Had you any
problems when your furled in ? I noticed that you have
no Deflector
wheel above the cap ? Also top section looks too high as the swage seems to run into the cap Anybody got any idea what a deflector wheel is? Ken |

Ken, you might find this thread interesting. The very first picture shows the "halyard deflector". I myself learnt that word in conjunction with that particular thread.
In my case the advice from Sparcraft said that I should get rid of it since I also have a halyard restrainer. I agree that your cap looks as if it is broken and missing. Johan |

I agree with Sparcraft that your foil looks too long. Johan |

Thanks Johan
I have now seen the deflector wheel on the Facnor web site, I don't think that one has ever been fitted. But from what you say it may have fouled the halyard anyway. Its a bit worrying if the foil is to long it came with the boat from the factory and I don't think that there is any adjustment on it. Ken

Johan
I have now read through the post you linked to and it has give me lots of thought. I now see why it apears that the foil is to long, as what I thought was a solid bar connecting the foil to the mast is actually the swage fitting on the end of the wire. This is probably due to the adjustable bottom section not being correctly fitted / adjusted. Back to the boat for another look!! Thanks Ken

If I look at the manual I linked to in the other thread it looks as if you can change the length of the foil, since it is telescopic, even after it was initially fitted.
I am posting a picture of my foil with the cap removed, for reference. I had to remove it to replace the swivel. Johan
