My 445 is out of the water having standing rigging replaced. Rigger noted the forestry is a fixed length with no room for a turnbuckle to tune rig. Consequently the mast rake is set once the fore stay is cut and rigged. We are wondering about correct rake. Has anyone measured their 445 mast rake?  Mine is a zspar rig and the mast definitely has a lot of rake. It sails well but does have weather helm and will round up in gusts over 20knt.

Correct.

Look for the Selden Furlex 300TD manual online which contains text below.

Also sailing 445 ZSPARS with decent amount of rake. Not sure how exactly you quantify it but from a distance in the marina, it clearly has more rake than our neighbours. We tend to sail short-handed and quite conservatively but not noticed any tendency to round-up unless pushed really really hard. Passage two days ago 8-9 knots in 20-25 knots on the beam with full sail which is pushing hard for us! Standing rigging 2-years old, sails new last year.

Cheers.

14.1 To lengthen the forestay

The forestay can be lengthened by fitting extra toggles, see table 3.3.3. Several toggles are usually required to change the mast rake noticeably.. These can only be fitted at the upper end of the system. On a Furlex with an 8mm (5/16”) forestay of the normal length 15400 mm (50’6”), the masthead is moved 158 mm (6 5/8”) aft if the forestay is lengthened using a standard toggle H=50 mm (2”).

14.2 To shorten the forestay.

To shorten the Forlex system the forestay wire as well as the luff section have to be shortened. See Dismantling chapter 17 and Assembly of the Furlex system , chapter 4

This is not for a 445/300 TD but fit 545 /300 TD Selden furlex but maybe can help a bit.

Thank you for your comments Ian. We have reinstalled we the same forestay length as we could not find any info. The mast base sits square in the mast base without any gaps for or aft as it should. Sailing in 20knt full sail is quite ok with good windward performance but gusts over 25knt can cause a round up. Easing the main is required to keep control.
