Have you ever checked your bilge when your 508 yacht is listing, i.e. sailing upwind? It might be a good idea. When my wife wanted to open the black water sea cock while sailing in open sea she was shocked to find freshwater in the bilge compartment of the forward bathroom (owner cabin). She emptied five to six buckets of water, which is about 25-30 liters.Where did this water come from? It wasn't a leak in the water pressure system as the pump did not start. It also wasn't water coming through the deck or some leaking screws when we watered the whole front deck. Later on the amount of water diminished, but still, it didn't stop. We then alternatively stopped using the front faucet or the shower. Result: it was less water and it could only be seen when the boat was listing. Checking the valves of the shower by dismantelling the black Corean cover, also checking the tubes and pump to empty the shower didn't show clear results either. There was a bit of water dripping down into the stringer due to bad Sicaflex sealings of the shower bassin. Further on we let check the water tanks and found some leakage of the sealing of the gauges. But the main question is still unanswered - also by Hanse after sales: How can such an amount of water stay in the stringer (and apparently for a longer time) and not running forward to the main (automatic) bilge pump? Is it a mistake in the drainage system of the 508? I wonder if somebody understands more of this issue! So far it is still an enigma also for the professionals of the shipyard who are dealing a lot with Hanse yachts for their charter business. The next step will be filling the tanks with colored water to check further issues. This test is still pending. Edited by tobo2 - 19 October 2022 at 19:35 |

Hi Tobo2 - We have a H495 / 2013 and have a similar problem. Wenn we use the front shower, after a certain period of time (not immediately), we get water in the main bilge. The Bilge in the master cabin is dry. The water must be laying somewhere underneath the bilge and when sailing (and healing) the water passes along the bulkhead to the main bilge. The tanks are Ok, the pump is not cycling - so there is no leak in the pressure system, shower basin is ok (I filled it with water and checked), the grey water pump is running smoothly and dry...I have no idea. We stopped using the front shower for the moment and the problem didn't occur.
I will install another, a bit bigger "service hatch" in the shower to get a better view in the bilge underneath the shower basin. I'll post the result if significant.

Our technician in Kos Marina, looking after our yacht during winter time, first dismantled the shower panel to check the valves. There was no leackage but he found some water dripping down from the shower basin into the bilge. He suggested to renew the caulkings with Sikaflex. Next his crew found some leakage on the gauge covers of the two water tanks. There were tighened and sealed. We hope having found the reason for this issue and will test it when we are back on the boat in April. Edited by tobo2 - 01 February 2023 at 19:55 |

On my 505, the shower was installed with suspect caulking at the base of the shower.
Took us awhile to find the bad caulking that was causing water to collect in the bilge. Since repaired, and she's bone dry. Other possible leaks include the hot water heater safety valve, shower or faucet taps, AC condensation, leaks at the stanchions, and of course leaky hatches. Takes some detective work and some paper towels to track these down. Good luck.

I have to say, I'm a defender and a fan of my Hanse 505 build quality and engineering. The exception is the bilge drainage system (and crappy thru-hulls). Water hangs out in stringers, doesn't drain to a low point, in many places bilge can't be accessed for cleaning, sometimes doesn't drain. For example, if any water gets in the aft locker, it ends up under the aft cabin bunks, and does not drain to the bilge until it overflows the stringers. When the bilge pump area forward of the engine is bone dry, there can still be a substantial amount of water in the bilge. In my opinion, all water inside a boat should drain to a low point with a bilge pump.
