Me again!

The current anchor windlass installation on my Hanse 400e is just shy of worthless... the chain simply piles up underneath the windlass and if I'm not constantly pulling out and shoving it forward, it jams!

Are other folks having a similar problem?
Any solutions? (hate to re-invent the wheel)
Pictures of existing installations and or mods that work would be greatly appreciated!

As always, thank you.

We also have the problem so we stop hauling every 5 meters or so and throw the chain forward. There might be better solutions, but once you are in the habit of throwing chain forward it's not too hard.

Yep, that's the basic process and you are right, it's not "too hard", but it really irks me to have to deal with what seems to be such an obvious design flaw!

Depending on other replies to this post, I'll pursue this issue with my broker and/or Hanse.

I made a modification to mine which improves but doesn't completely solve the problem.  I bolted a sheet of aluminum under the windlass to form a "slide" that feeds the chain forward.

I don't have a photo and won't be on the boat for a couple more months so I attached a sketch below to illustrate.  The red line is a cross-section of the plate, which is fastened with two carriage bolts shown in blue.  The bolts are pressed into the plate so you can slide the plate in place, pushing the bolts upward through the holes drilled in the windlass mount.   Two nuts are then tightened on from above.

I still need to pause and pull chain forward now and then but at least it is easier to reach and to see if it is pushed forward by the "slide"

Hi Landlocked,

Would you have a picture or two of the windlass installation on the 400 as it looks pretty much the same on the 430? ANd maybe we'll have the same issues.
Many thank's

This is all I can offer for now:

Sadly, I don't live close to my boat, but will be there in another month and will try to collect some measurements and photos showing the modification.

The photo above was prior to the mod.  The windlass is mounted on an aluminum bracket and there is less than a foot of space directly below it so the chain piles up there until either you pull it out or it jams the windlass.  My mod just creates a sloped surface under the windlass to help slide the chain forward.

It will be interesting to hear if they have changed this at all for the 430.

That look the same fitting than the H430. I enclosed a picture taken at Düsseldorf. I am afraid but we'll probably have the same issues.

ALERT!  Did you know that Lewmar is offerring an upgraded main gear (heavier duty) due to some problems encountered with the existing main gear on the Hanse supplied ?  They claim that the windlass gear is sufficient but that some at anchor have failed to cleat off the rode and, instead, all the load was transferred to the windlass.  This caused the main gear to fail.  They are reluctant to talk about it but will provide the beefed up gear if pushed.

Thanks for the alert Silver Sailor... do you have any more info or can you point us towards  more specific details on how to pursue?

(i.e. did you speak with customer service, is their something on their website, did you work with your local dealer?)

Greatly appreciated,

Carlos
