Gertha, if i move a box of beer way aft. on my racing dinghy it wil also change the waterline
![]() But on a bigger boat like the Hanse 445 an extra sail stowed aft or the anchor up or down will not change a lot. I think from the pictures it look like the shallow keel is stern heavy. At the same time is seems odd that a yachtbuilder like Hanse would make a mistake like that - after all it's not the first boat they are building.

I was referring to the Hanse 445 in question. Here you would have to misplace a bit more than 200 kg to get the angle in the picture.
On my Hanse 470 you would need apr. 8 guys in the cockpit to get the same result. My point is that on a bigger boat like the Hanse 445 you can not explain the waterline issue with an anchor up or down and a sail more or less in the aft cabin. And my dinghy is only 72 kg but then again, my beer boxes are more than 2 kilo as well.

I saw a shoal draft 445 a couple of weeks ago and it did not appear to have the same issue. Could the yard have botched the installation of the keel during commissioning? A

The large blue and yellow flag should be changed to a red duster. Simon |

Hello,
How do you like the larger engine on the 445? Would you mind telling me what type of cruising speed you get? Big difference over the standard engine in cruising speed? Thank you, Matthew

@ salt,
Your cruising speed is given / limited by the hull shape. A bigger engine will not make you go faster on flat water with no wind. But with a bigger engine you will be able to keep your hull's max speed even if are sailing against heavy wind and waves. Also a bigger engine will allow you to keep lover rpm's hence less engine noise at moderate cruising speed. |

Hello Matthew Talking to other owners about the 445 they are satisfied
with the smaller engine. We choose the larger engine without really knowing the
difference. We wanted to have a lot of power in rough conditions. For us cruising speed is equal to 1800 rpm and it gives a speed of almost 7 knots. If we go for maximum rpm the boat comes up to 10 knots! Would we choose the larger engine again? Yes, we think the additional cost was worth it. You can newer get to much power! Regards Stig |

We have the standard engine and are fine with it. We also get around 7 Knts. on 1.800 RPM. It seems to be the sweet spot anyway as we consume a litle less than 2 litres diesel an hour, which I hardly can believe myself. In max throttle we get 9 knts +
Normaly we do not have to steam into heavy conditions. In such conditions we usualy still try to sail as it is rather uncomfortable by engine.
However, the extra power never harms.
