Hi!

Our 458 is set to be arriving in 2023 - and we have room to add an option or two more... Would love feedback on:
  1. Things you are so happy that you did add...
  2. Things you could do without...
  3. Things you wish you had ordered, rather than put on later...
We've got 3 berths, 2 baths, stern and bow thrusters, extra winches, generator, a/c, grill, cockpit cushions, saloon table lower-able... 2nd fridge in galley (not cockpit...yet!)

It can be anything below or above deck. We're happy with what we have, but have room for something else... we're hanse newbies, so look to you folks for guidance.

Cheers to all!

The "packs" are all pretty essential, including the performance sails.
I don't have (or feel the need for) the stern thruster but find the bow thruster useful in tight marinas and when mooring in cross winds.
Make sure you get side gates.
The larger cockpit table (even without fridge) is great for storage of stuff like phones and binoculars.  The small smaller storage bins with perspex lids either side of the companionway will fry electronic devices on a hot day.
Also you'll need a light wind sail so get the upgraded double bow roller and spinnaker kit.
Don't get the factory canvas.  Your dealer can probably supply better quality and customised to your needs.
My own spec was minimal and I've enjoyed adding additional equipment myself...

There are many items not offered by the factory that you or your dealer can fit.  Things like fans, charcoal water filters, boat WiFi with internet, battery monitor equipment, solar power...

Much depends on your planned usage.

I have the fresh water plug in . Not sure I would order it again . If it filled up the tank yes , but as it is you still need to fill the tank everytime anyway. I am working on an adjustment to have it fill the tank.

We have the cockpit fridge . It’s great and takes so many drinks . Saves you having to go below every time and you can leave the inside fridge just for food . Only problem is you need to keep the lid clear to open it so you do lose some space on an already small table.

Get stainless steel chain if budget allows. My galvanized one rusted after a few weeks . Was changed under warranty to a better grade one but next time I would go for stainless steel. Also I think I might need more than 60meters so maybe get 100 straight away .

2 x 160 AGM batteries are not enough . I have 400 watts of solar and I just get by. Will change to lithium. If they are offering get that also if within budget . On the new 460 there is the lithium option.

6 fenders are not enough . Winch handles supplies are too short . Get the longer ones .

Teak on the side decks and coach roof is nice and I believe totally changes the look of the boat .

We have the dyneema upgrades. Ropes are still not good enough. Halyards still stretch. Maybe get the basic ropes and change yourself to better quality dyneema.  Jib sheet is too thick and twists and gets stuck in clutch so it’s so difficult to furl the jib. I will change to a smaller diameter .

Electric toilets are nice, would not get without .

I also installed after market an inverter and an AIS transponder . Both a must I believe .

In addtion to above recommendations:
- Get the electric winches ex factory, nearly impossible to add later!
- Get the side gates.
- Go for one manual and one electric toilet and have for both a complete spare pump.
- Inverter powering the pantry plug for coffee machine or mixer/blender
- Fridge for making ice cubes

As above, order all the canvas locally (including lazy bag ), the Hanse solutions are not the best quality and comfort wise. Make sure that you can reach the zipper of the lazy bag.

Frank,
Just wondering, what do you mean with ‘make sure you can reach the zipper of the lazy bag’ ?

It is where it is right? High up, requiring leaning over sprayhood (and in my case sprayhood extender).
Only thing to do, in my view, is to attach a piece of string to the zipper slider.

I’m asking as I will replace my (locally made, UK De Vries, great product) lazy bag as it’s getting real tired after 2 zipper replacements, Velcro replacements and several areas of patching up worn areas.

Any clever improvement ideas on the lazy bag ?

The lazy bag is almost impossible to close (especially with stiff FCL sails or the Quantum equivalent).  I have the zip offset to starboard with two thirds of the bag to port.  A great suggestion by Phil at IMG.
I also have a loop of cord doubled up to run front to back, doubled up and each end attached to the zip, a bit like the loop on a furling spinnaker.  This lows me to pull the zip past the sprayhood which is very deep.  A great suggestion from NZ 418 owner Andre.
Of course it you are not a purist, in mast reefing would alleviate these challenges.

Happy about:
Upgraded Ultra anchor with added chain - works great and plenty of chain
Electric winches - the main is a beast
Bow thruster - a big help in docking
Black countertops
TV - what can I say? I like it
One electric head - works better than manual but we have a manual as backup
Yanmar 57hp engine - seems big enough and runs like a top

Not happy about:
Bed mattresses - kind of hard. Should have upgraded to comfort
FkexiTeek decks - looks nice but gets very hot here in Florida

Neutral about:
Microwave - it gets used occasionally but even the small one uses a lot of power
Generator - really only need it for A/C on the hook
Cockpit cooler - it’s kind of handy but also uses more power.
Lowerable salon table - nice for movie night but it’s big and hard to move around
Bimini - glad I have one but seems like a custom install could do better
Grill - cool but doesn’t get used a lot.

Wish it was a factory option:
Combo anchor/tri-color mast head light
Combo steaming/fore deck light
Installed solar
Leisure furl boom - main sail is a beast with lazy bag
More house battery or LiFePo option - 2x165 isn’t really enough
Anchor wash down pump
Flag halyards

Wish I would have got:
Crossover sail - self tacker is great for what it does but it has its limits
Stern thruster - hey, I’m not great at maneuvering in a crosswind

Hope that helps. Enjoy your boat!

Peter,
I am 1.9 m tall, my wife 1.65. For her the zipper is unreachable. Make sure that the zipper never disconnects at the boom end. I am also using the endless line as posted above. However getting the EPEX sail into the lazy bag is always a challenge. I added some canvas triangle at the front end, which make it a little bit easier.

Hi Peter,

I wish we had got the factory fitted teak rubbing strake.  we are venial wrapped and it would save some anxious moments.

Regards
