Hi,

I had a look beneath the existing sheet winches and also the locations prepared for sheet winches on my Hanse. I was very surprised as it seems like there are some backing plates located on the port side but it looks very different on the starboard side. On the starboard side, it seems much thinner and I can't really see any backing plates. Is this the way it should be? Looks strange to have these variations between port side and starboard.

Portside forward, without winch mounted

Portside aft, with winch mounted

Starboard side aft, with winch mounted

Starboard side forward, no winch mounted.

Looks like they forgot to add backing plates on one side. There should be 10mm aluminum plates laminated under the winches.

Thanks,

Anyone else that can confirm that backing plates should be on both sides or are in place on your boats (yes, I know it seems very reasonable for symmetric reasons but anyhow)

I just checked.
Mine looks exactly like your pictures.

What I think is happening, is that on port side (always a lazarette) the construction is different from starboard (sometimes a third hut, sometimes a larger lazarette/technical room.

On port you are effective looking at the underside of the deck.
On starboard there is some hollow space (where the aluminium plate sits) between the ‘ceiling’ of the lazarette and the deck.
I.e. the polyester molding/construction is different left and right.
Left you see courser glass fiber, right you see finer glass fiber.

If I (or you) wouldn’t have had aluminium plates glassed in, on starboard, my winch would have been ripped off at some stage in the past 17 years.

Thank you very much for that. You are probably right. Took a trip to the boat and brought a metal detector. Indeed, there seem to be metal also on the starboard side.

Since I just recently bought the boat, and it only came with main sail and self tacking jib, I was starting to think that the winches may never have been put to the test - and as you said, would be ripped off if being used with sail with other sheet solution.

Pulse back to normal... Thank you!
