We recently took part in the Bay Regatta from Phuket, 4 days of racing ending up in different parts of Phang Nga bay each evening. There were 20 monohulls and 12 catamarans, including 2 Hanse 400 and 2 Hanse 415s in various classes. This was our first regatta racing under an IRC handicap so it was interesting to see how competitive we were. We had two days of light winds and two of 15-20 knots, in the latter the handicap was fine.
All the best Paul

Excellent! the scenery looks amazing.
Not surprising that you did better with the higher winds. Hanses are not light air machines. The handicap system that you were using, were there different ratings for different wind strengths? |

Hi Steve
Unfortunately the IRC system doesn't vary with wind strengths. Depending on the proportion of downwind legs I would say we could hold our own between 10-15 knots and above that we were sailing above our handicap. All the best Paul

Hi Paul, great images, how did you find the relative performance of the 415's v 400's in various wind strengths?

Hi Stephen
Quite hard to answer your question as all four Hanses had differing set ups and sail types available, but generally I would say that the 415s had a slight edge on the 400s except in light airs upwind where the 400s with their shrouds being further inboard than on the 415 benefited from being able to use large overlapping genoas. Above 10 knots the extra sail area is not needed and the 415s with self tackers were pointing higher with less leeway. All the best Paul
