    Posted: 29 July 2023 at 17:54
Hi, I have a 2021-model H348, fitted with a B&G V60 VHF radio + H60 Wireless Handset.  The handset battery is charged when it is in the BC-12 Wireless Charger cradle.   As I mostly sail singlehanded, I like to have the H60 in the cockpit where I can easily reach it without having to go below.  This means that the H60 is only on the BC-12 Wireless Charger when I leave the boat on its berth with Shore Power connected and batteries isolated.   Under those conditions, the BC-12 is not getting any power, and the H60 is not getting charged.  I would like to have it so that the BC-12 is powered all the time, even with the batteries isolated, so that the H60 is always fully-charged when I come to take the boat out.
I have an Ultrasonic Antifouling System installed, which is NOT isolated from the service batteries, even if the isolation switch is set to "Isolated".  I would like to connect the BC-12 charger to the same circuit, so it gets charged all the time.
Is there any reason why I should not do this?
Thanks in advance.

You would find comments on the forum which recommends not leaving the charger on all the time because the charger fails. B&G also now make the same recommendation. We added an on/off button the the charger so we only turn it on for a few hours every few weeks. We had a charger fail after a few years but since we added the on/off switch the next charger has lasted 6 years and is still going.

Hi, totally agree with Wayne we burnt out our charger by leaving it on for extended periods. Luckily this was in the warranty period and it was replaced for free. Both the cradle and the handheld get very hot. We now only charge it when necessary.
Later, due to a lightning strike we had to replace the handheld unit, so had a spare cradle which I have mounted on the front of the cockpit table and wired into the 12 volt "cigarette lighter" socket circuit, that way I can keep the handheld in the cockpit and charge it if necessary.
All the best

Paul & Wayne, thanks for your prompt and very helpful replies.  I shall certainly consider the option of having a charging cradle mounted in the cockpit.

I know the H50.had a well hidden USB port for charging.  I haven't looked on the H60, but this might be an option if you have a suitable outlet in the cockpit.
I would also advise against leaving it permanently on charge.  I've wired mine up to one of the spare switches on the Wurth panel.

@Caulkhead, I too want my H60 in the cockpit and am looking for a place to mount it. Probably on the port side, across from the engine control that is on the stb side. I am going to run a wire to it from a spare on the panel.

I am not sure if the H60 is better than H50 regarding it's charging intelligence. For sure leaving the H50 in all the time killed the battery. I was told by B&G that this is supposed to be better in the H60, but no idea as my boat is only 3 mo old.

BTW, on my boat, you can turn on the VHF without turning on the battery and instruments. I have never had a boat with this 'feature' not sure it is supposed to do this, or it wasn't wired correctly. But you can pull power from here to a remote H60 in the cockpit if you want it powered all the time, or put a switch on it.

It has always seemed strange that Hanse have wired the VHF on a permanent circuit.  This is by design as can be seen from the circuit diagram.
There are a few other devices wired in this way such as bilge pump and the light at the companionway, but these make more sense.
I can only assume it is a safety decision but it frustrates me that every time I turn my instruments off (inevitably forgetting the VHF which is hidden behind a door) the VHF starts complaining loudly about no position data.

Thanks again for all the helpful replies.   I think my H60 is wired only to be powered when the rest of the instruments are powered, but I will double-check.

Ha. I don't close that cabinet anymore. I leave it open all the time to remember to shut the radio. For some reason, mine does not tell me it has lost gps. I wonder if I set some alarm or setting. Because I sail in a crowded harbor, I have turned off AIS alerts, maybe that is it.
