Hi all,

last week my vhf handset, a B&G H50, suddenly died on me. It cannot connect anymore to the base station, the B&G V50.

The importer in the Netherlands informed me it's a known problem and quite some handsets failed on that particular element. To make things even better: no repair possible/available and also no new H50 handsets can be delivered anymore. Good news: we can offer you a reduction on the purchase of a H60 handset. And by the way, the H60 cannot connect to a V50 so you need to replace the base station as well. Gggrrrrrrrr

My question: has anyone a B&G H50 handset unused, perhaps because your main unit broke down?
I'm very very interested to buy it from you.

Thanks for you support!
Henk

My go to in these types of situations is typically ebay.   For example:

Maybe you can transplant screen from yours to something like this.  Just an idea

when you said it's "died"... what do you mean?
Mine stopped charging because the battery went faulty.  I replaced the battery with a similar one i bought on ebay (I had to swap the connector to make it work), but it brought it back to life...

Exactly the same issue with mine. Seems to be a, not uncommon, problem.
Will be interesting to see what the actual issue is.
Cant take a joke, don't buy a boat.

If it is a battery issue, I bought one of these off of Amazon, which seems to work.

Did this ever get resolved?
The other issue I discovered is that the inductive charger is wired incorrectly on my boat, in as it doesn't turn off when you turn off the breaker to the VHF.  So apparently it overheats and dies.

So there is a hidden USB (mini, not micro) connector under the rubber flap at the bottom / back.  It's not obvious that it opens up (it's the same flap covering the headphone jack), but the top does pull back with some coaxing.  Connecting a USB cable to that charged the device.  So I'm now curious if the battery was actually "dead" on mine, because I didn't realize that port was there before I swapped out the new battery.

So if you haven't tried it, suggest attempting to charge with the USB port before doing anything else.

Hi Simon,

my broken handset is not resolved yet. It's the wireless connection to the base station (over wifi) that died. It's apparently a common problem, many handhelds broke down same way.

Another issue indeed is the overcharging of the battery. For that reason I've installed a simple button next to the handheld cradle where I can switch the power supply to the handheld on/off. I only activate charging when needed, the default position is off.

If someone has a broken battery problem on the H50 handheld unit, I'm offering to buy it from you!!

Below my solution to avoid the overcharging of the battery:

Dear Henk,
Starting sommerholiday in Croatia, my handset did the exact same as yours.. not able to Connect to basestation any more. Beeing only 3 years old this unacceptable - its not a toy.
I’m very interested in what solution you found.

Best regards
Søren

My v50 handset charge cradle failed, apparently due to the Hanse wiring issue where the cradle is always powered on.
That was fixed by changing out to the V60 radio. The V60 handset the started to drop out of connection with the base station. This tended to happen when there was lots of traffic on the radio. The drop outs were fixed by changing out the V60 to a new V60. BandG reliability is not good!
Fortunately all my change outs were under warranty.
Unfortunately I threw out the old V50 handset, so cannot help.

I assume you've tried the pairing routine?  I expect that if you called B&G then they obviously took you through it, but never hurts to ask:

To pair the VHF radio and the wireless handset:

On the VHF radio, long press on the MENU button

  • Scroll down to WIRELESS H and enter
  • Select SUBSCRIBE and enter
  • Select YES and enter

Power on the wireless handset

  • Press and hold SCAN until SEARCHING changes to REGISTER

The pairing is completed when HS SUBSCRIBE SUCCESSFUL! is displayed.

If you end up changing out the system or doing something that frees up your charging cradle, i'd be interested in buying it.  I like the small switch idea, that's easy and looks nice.  It's impossible to find a new cradle anywhere.
