Without any real obvious cause we discovered a crack in our bulkhead. (Between main and front cabin). The horizontal crack is situated in the lower left corner between the door and the cupboard. It could only be seen from the frontcabin-side. After notification of our insurancecompany we visited a repairyard and a temporary fix was made. The yard did have experience with similar failures but not yet with a 400.
Does any of you have a same experience with a 400.? Mine is slotnr 367 and commissioned in 2008. i am the first owner and to my knowledge nothing exceptionel happened otter than a bit of a bumpy ride from Flushing to Oostende (bf 5, wind against tide, with one reef) a few days earlier.

Hi,

The bulkhead is solid marine plywood with a 5mm veneer on the outside.  We have seen the veneer itself crack slightly from the corner of the door frame but this has only ever been cosmetic in the past and I would be very surprised if it is all the way through the bulkhead.

In this situation we have removed the veneer to check the bulkhead itself and then put on a new veneer when we know the bulkhead is sound.

As I mentioned earlier, so far the bulkhead has always been sound.

I hope that helps?

Kind regards

Phil

A similar crack developed on my 400 - it was the same bulkhead, port side. Hanse sent a person from the factory to fix it - excellent service. I believe he used a grinder to remove veneer around the crack, used either epoxy or fiberglass to strengthen the area and then patched it over with a separate board (white, just cosmetic).

Hallo all,
My boat has been repaired at a repair yard according to the advise given by Hanse.
In order to achieve this the cupboards in the front cabin on the port hand side as well as the port side front seat have been removed. The crack has been opened up and has been filled with epoxy, the bulkhead has been laminated in with some extra layers and about 10-15 cm's higher up.
No additional damage has been found during the repair.
As to the cause of the damage the surveyor of the insurance company noted "inherent defect"
The repair costs (about Euro 2.000) have been paid by the insurance company.

hi all,
maybe a trivial question: do all Hanse have a "watertight crash bulkhead" as described in the rule 3.13 of OSR?
If not, how reasonable is the work to do?
[mine is Hanse 400]

thanks in advance
