I have been looking for the 'right boat' during the summer and quite like the 301.

I have two concerns and would welcome any opinions.

1) The self tacking head sail: I'm assuming it must be a small sail and therefore performance is poorer than a Genoa. If already fitted can it be dispensed with without leaving obvious marks etc.

2) I have noticed some have a MD2020 engine but most the MD2010. Is the 2020 worth going for?

Any other comments will be welcomed.

Thank you

Phil

Hi Phil,

As a former owner of a 292 type I can assure you that the speed pottential is high enough if it is blowing more that 2 bft. Below 2 bft you will need a Genaker or Genua. Most of the 301 come with selftacker and rail for genoa so you can use both sails (if you have).

For the 10 pk versus 20.... well 10 is a little weak I think. If you sail in a area were there is a lot off current you will need the extra horsepower! If there is no big current than 10 will do the trick for you.

But above all: Hanse's are good sailingvessels and look in alle the other topics for more info.

Happy Sailing you all!

Hi Phil,

I looked at a variety of boats for 18 months before I bought a 301 but I certainly have no regrets in fact I am delighted.

Don't worry about the self tacker, but once you have got used to the boat you will need a genoa(I would suggest a 145%)

As for the engine I would go for the 2020 if you can find one. I sail in the Bristol Channel and we certainly need the extra horses there.Best wishes in your search.

Hi,

I have a 145% Genoa for when all the guys are on and we are racing hard, but for cruising I use the self tacker and can sail single handed. The Main is massive so gives lots of drive, the self tacker adds to that by providing a slot.

Regarding the engine I sail in lots of tide on the Bristol Channel and have the 10hp engine. I bought Cutty Stark new and so had the option of having a 20hp engine however Hanse put me off saying  The hull is easily driven and the boat is close winded. If there is any wind you would motorsail and the 10hp drives the hull just as fast as the 20hp if there is little wind or sea. They are quite right you can almost motorsail into the wind !!

Hope this helps

Hi Phil

We have a 331

We changed over from our self tacker this year to a genoa - the performance is greatly enhanced.

Although only my husband and i sail our 331 - getting used to doing a bit more work as the crew seemed a bit of a pain initially, I have to admit it is so much better.

We have left our self tacking equipment in place - it does not bother us atall - and we have the option of changing the sail if need be.

Where will you be sailing??

We are in the Solent.
