That's what I would like to do on my 342. I feel sorry for the lady without a face though. She's probably too good-looking and would draw everybody's attention from the placement of the instruments.

The problem is the lack of headroom on the 370 hatch compared to other boats. It would make access to the companionway difficult. However it is an individual decison as to whether that is a problem or not. I suggest if you are to do it you want to minimise the space taken up - prehaps fixing to the GRP behind the hatch rather than a bar (as in the photo).

On my 342 I have installed a bigger instrument pod on the bar of the steering pedestral. In this pod the Simrad wind and combi instruments have been put, as well as the sinple GPS (which is not a chartplotter) and the VHF commandmike.
When ordering the boat I had some doupts about the reliability of the Simrad instruments. However, so far so good; they still work.
But if they start falling apart or simply do work the way they should, I shall replace the instruments most probably by Tacktick instruments.
Those will be put in a separate instrument pod over the companion way, so that the information is also visable for those in the cockpit who are not steering.
An instrument pod to be put over the companion way is available from NavPod (google); not cheap but affordable these day's for Europeans.

This thread
has been very informative, thanks to everybody! Has anyone yet find a good
solution to install instruments over the companionway?
Here is a picture
of another unknown instrument pod. Maybe it could be modified somehow to fit. Does
anyone recognize the manufacturer for this or for the one in Aquamenti’s
picture? (Couldn’t find with Google

On my 370 I moved the Simrad Multi (the only instrument that was factory installed) from the pedestal to the starboard bulkhead. Added a Simrad analog wind below it. Now they are viewable by all from anywhere in the cockpit.

This company makes water proof industrial LCD monitors, much cheaper than Raymarine. Seems they can operate on 12 volts. This would suit a PC based system. |

Brightness of the industrial monitor is only 200 nits. I don't know if that would be sufficient for a daylight flooded cabin.

Merinalle the instruments and pod in my image are from Silva. The image is manipulated to fit the railing but there are railings solutions that will fit fine from what I have seen. These links are to Swedish pages that sell these gadgets http://www.bryggan.nu/nexus/large/01947.htm #5380-4720 |
