For clarity, I call the fuel filter between the fuel tank and the engine mounted fuel filter the secondary filter.

This past weekend while coming in an inlet, the engine began to run very rough.  We sailed in the inlet.  Upon going below, my wife informed me we had a strong smell of diesel in the boat.  A quick look in the bilge indicated a large amount of diesel sloshing around.  We immediately shut down the engine.

After sailing up the river to an area where we could anchor out of the waterway, I started looking into the problem.  It didn't take long.  The glass bowl on the bottom of the filter had broken into about four pieces and fallen into the bilge.

Now that it is fixed (replaced the whole assembly), I still have two questions 1) why did the bowl break, and 2) how did the engine run at all?

 Hi

Luck was possibly the reason the engine carried on running and possibly the bowl did not fall off until after you anchoured. Or the fuel from the filter to the injector was enough to keep running. I deal with diesel pressure washer for a job and that problem occurs all the time. We change them for the inline plastic filters with a sealed paper gauze. Problem solved however always carry spares because in certain circumstances the filters can collapse, but they are cheap and cheerful approx £1 per filter
