Hi, a few weeks ago our 10mm Dyneema jib halyard slipped badly in a squall. It turned out that the cover to the halyard had broken in the jammer and the jammer couldn't hold the intact dyneema core. 
This made me think about how this had happened, like most people with a furling jib, the sail is up all season and I am always careful to release the halyard tension when back in the marina. This means that the various tension dependent jammer bite points are exposed to the sun on the cockpit coaming.
My solution to protect the ropes was to make up teak decking covers.
So far I have only made the starboard cover, but hopefully the learning curve means that the port one should be better and quicker. 
This was the first (final) fitting of the starboard cover, so a bit of trimming and planing still to do, but so far happy with the result and hopefully our sails will not fall down at inopportune times again!

This looks like a really high quality solution.  However I'm not convinced that your sheet failure was entirely due to sun damage.  I had similar failure on the casing of the main sheet.  I put it down to the difficulty I had in getting the clutches to hold these dyneema halyards when the boat was new.  IM eventually supplied larger clutch cams which solved the problem but they did chew up the outer casing on the ropes.  After losing the main I reversed (end for end) the job to extend its life.

Hi Stuart, thanks for the nice reply! I agree that the clutches can damage the ropes, but there was no obvious sign of any jammer damage on the jib halyard, what was clear was the colour fading of the outer sheathing, especially when compared to the bits that are usually under the coachroof.
The sun here tends to be stronger and higher in the sky than in the UK Smile. So UV protection is a big issue.

Love it! Best of all itís non slip! I was thinking of adding some matching Flexiteak to my factory fitted GRP ones on the 418 as they donít have any non slip pattern moulded in.

Hi, I took the old jib halyard off the boat today and from the photo below you can see the amount of UV damage, the area that was normally under the coachroof is still green and still feels slightly oily. The area that was normally on the cockpit coamingjust in front of the jammers is faded and the outer cover is dry and almost brittle to touch. really looking forward to spending many $$ on a replacement halyard. Cry
I have now finished the port cover and am pleased with the result, so much so that I had to re-visit the starboard one as it would have driven me mad looking at the difference!! Smile

My one and a half season old main halyard has serious chafing to the outer casing, although the core is fine.  This is caused by the spinlock clutch aggressively gripping the rope.
Like many others, I had problems with slipping clutches on my 385 which was resolved by swapping the cams.  When specifying the 458 I questioned if this issue had be resolved and was assured that it was no longer a problem  Hmmm.  Well the clutch no longer slips but the rope casing now being used is more susceptible to chafe.
I hope that I have caught this in time to get to the end of the season by swapping the rope end for end but a new halyard is required when I can arrange to get one delivered.
With 25% VAT in Greece that will be Ä460.  Ouch!

My main halyard has a few extra meters on it. I cut a bit off at the shackle end and this will move the clutch chafe area to a new place.  Easier than doing an end for end swap and I can repeat it many times. If you order new, add some extra length to it !

They are very classy, nice job! I miss the real teak from my last boat, despite the maintenance. I keep joking with people that the only real bit of wood on my boat is the cockpit table!

Believe it or not, after end for ending the rope, the damaged area was exactly in the middle and so still a problem.
Halyard has been off again today and I opened up the eye splice to work out how it had been done.  Exposed core created a 10cm loop that you can use with a cow hitch on the shackle.  Found a YouTube video to assist.
Liros Regatta 2000 is a real pain as the outer case is so abrasive and tightly woven.  Probably doesn't help being a couple of seasons old and a bit salty.
Anyhow, I am delighted that my eye splice looks as good as the original.
We have an 80Nm sail tomorrow so I hope it works!

Another solution is to splice an extra cover over your halyard in the area of the clutches. It servers multiple purposes:
1. protects the original line against UV light
2. the clutch holds the line better due to increased diameter
3. when the clutch action starts to wear the outer cover, you simply replace it.

The incredible app 'Rope Splicing' explains this (splice 6.1), and many more splices. It's free, you can download it from the App Store. The company PremiumRopes.com based in the Netherlands launched it.
